Tanner presses his lips together. I can almost see the cogs whirring in his brain. He’s never considered himself a decent guy. Not because he isn’t, but because of the mental scars he carries. We all do, to varying degrees.

“Well, you’re not going anywhere tonight. There’s plenty of rooms here for you to choose from. Come on,” Theo says, getting to his feet and holding his hand out toward her.

Maggie looks like he’s asked her to step into a nest of vipers. Any other woman would be clawing her way over her best friends’ dead body for an offer like the one he’s just made her. “Oh, no, I couldn’t—"

“Yes, you could,” I add my voice to the mix. “Unless you have somewhere else to stay?”

“I, well, I was going to sleep in my car,” she admits, chewing nervously on her bottom lip.

“Not happening,” Tanner states, surprising us all. “Like Theo says, there’s plenty of spare rooms. You need to get some rest before you make the journey back to Maryland tomorrow.”

And there it is. Tanner wants her gone tomorrow.

Not if I’ve got any say in it.
