The four of us paced up and down the corridor like expectant fathers and I wondered if one day I’d get to do that or if it would be one of the other guys. I glanced at Carter, who marched up and down like he was in the military and then to Ryan, who was still limping and complaining about his leg hurting. Luckily his stomach was fine now but we could hardly send him to Accident and Emergency with referred pain and from another person at that.

And then there was Kane, who was rubbing his chest and mumbling. The guy had gone from brooding and moody to bloody crazy and screamed at us for uttering any advice about how to deal with Lacey.

A mobile rang.

“Hi Clay,” Carter said.

I knew it wouldn’t be long before the shit hit the fan. We were supposed to be Lacey’s guardians and right now we were letting her down constantly. It was a good job she killed the demon when she did, and now she was acutely aware of who was out there. But still… was she about to say the Dark King was there?

I heard shouting over the mobile.

“I know. She hurt her leg. She is having it x-rayed right now. The paramedics don’t think she broke it but we’ll soon find out.”

More shouting came through the receiver.

“She went out on her bike alone and the paramedics brought her here.” Carter listened again. “The bike is crushed,” Carter said, and I wasn’t sure it was the type of reply Clay required.

“Kane, why Kane?” Carter said.

Carter handed the phone to Kane. “Lacey’s uncle, Clay.” He put his hand over the mouthpiece. “One of the top guys in the kingdom.”

He knows who he is, Carter.

Kane nodded and took the mobile. “Hello Sir.”

“Don’t worry, it will never happen again. I assure you. Lacey refused to move in with us and if I have to, I’ll move out and in with her,” Kane continued.

"Fuck, you won’t," I hissed.

Kane turned and smiled at me. “Yes, we’re all going to get along better from now on. One or two egos were impeding what we’re here for.”

I continued to watch Kane’s face, but Carter strode away. Kane’s head bobbed a few times, but he remained silent as he listened to Clay. Carter finally walked back and glared at Kane, still talking to Lacey’s uncle, obviously annoyed Clay had asked specifically for Kane.

“Thank you, I look forward to meeting you too.” Kane ended the call. He smiled, and he handed the mobile back to Carter.

“He wants us to go to his home the moment Lacey is able.”

And you’ll move out with her?” I hissed. “Since when have you been so keen on Lacey’s interests?”

Kane emitted a loud sigh. “Since I stopped worrying about Carter and going for what I wanted. When I thought with my heart.”

“Your heart,” I whispered.

Kane smiled a sardonic grin. “Yes Seb, my heart. Not my dick, not my ego, not anything else and do you know what happened.”

I shrugged my shoulders.

“It was all she wanted. What she needs.”

My eyes popped open. “You’re all she needs.”

“No, I’m not saying that. I’m saying we are going about this the wrong way. Including me. Until tonight I was plotting to get her to myself and I think the way you and Carter are acting, I would have won.”

I reared my head back and burst into a fit of laughter. “No way, she's mine.”

Kane ran his tongue under his upper lip. “But I know this is bigger than me and Lacey falling in love. Lacey needs family, she needs more than knights, and for now she needs all four of us because if she doesn’t get it she’ll end up with Jack and Blake.”

“There’s only two of them. Us four are much better protection for Lacey,” Carter said.
