“I think he stabbed me. At least I thought he had.”

Ryan smiled in a knowing way. “You’ve healed yourself. Did you feel pain?”

“No, but I’m sure I saw blood earlier,” I said

“It means you’ve turned eighteen,” he replied.

“Of course I’m eighteen, it was my birthday remember,” I said.

Ryan shook his head. “You’re like the Queen. You have an official birthday which is private and a false one which you celebrate.”

“To protect me from when I turned eighteen?” I queried.

“Exactly. They knew your magic was going to start once you turned eighteen because of your father dying. They’ve been monitoring those from the magical kingdom who came of age. But for you, they stuck around afterwards, but it’s not for me to tell you much more,” Ryan said.

“Why do you know more than me?” I asked.

“We all know more than you, Lacey. We are your Knights if you accept us,” he said. “But now the Dark King knows who you are. Which is earlier than expected.”

“Lacey, let us sort this situation out.” Carter pointed to the bulk on the floor. “And then you need to come back to the house for a talk and then you need to visit Clay.”

“I’ve got ballet tonight,” I said.

Carter looked at his friends and shook his head. “Not tonight. We need to deal with the situation and ensure it doesn’t get back. And the fact he doesn’t return will tell them what they want to know.”

I nodded and asked, “What was his mission?”

Carter beamed a smile that won my heart many years ago. “To out you, to find you. To find Sunshine, the golden one.” He hesitated and looked at the others.

“What your father told you is true,” Ryan said. “We need to get you some clothes because you’re coming back with us.”

“I’ll be fine,” I argued.

“No, I’ll take you to get your bag and take you to our house,” Kane said firmly. “A few days to get over it and then I’ll bring you back here.”

I rubbed at the back of my neck. The prickling sensation was still clear. “Is he definitely dead? I’ve got a feeling he isn’t.”

“He is, you’re feeling me,”the voice that spoke to me earlier said.

I stared at Kane and shook my head. “Sorry?” I whispered.

“Definitely,” Kane replied.

Kane insisted on taking me to the dorms, but I wished it was someone else because the atmosphere between us was as cold as ice. He stood with his enormous arms crossed over his wide chest as he watched as I filled an overnight bag for a few days.

“Let’s go,” he said, taking my bag. “The others will be busy for a while. I’ll take you home.”

I noticed he passed a few side glances to me and it was like he wanted to say something but couldn’t decide if it was worth it or not. I was sure he noticed me looking at him, too.

“Kane, can I speak to you like this?”I said to Kane telepathically and glanced as he started the engine to go back to the guys’ house.

Nothing. I didn’t know if he was pretending to not hear me that way, but it was about a minute later before he spoke.

“What happened between you, Jack and Blake when I saw you the other day?” he asked, his eyes remained on the road. But I twisted myself in the car seat and tried to read his face, but it was absent of emotion, not angry, not sad, nothing.

“None of your business,” I said.

He smirked.
