He sang some of the lyrics in her ear and she pulled back in surprise. “You know this song?”

“It’s a classic,” he said, kissing her cheek. “And to paraphrase the lyrics, I’ve waited a long time, and I want to share everything with you.”

She was at a complete loss for words. She’d agreed to move in with him but wasn’t sure if he was offering more. The uncertainty didn’t scare her though; she would let things unfold and see what happened.

“No witty comeback? That’s a first.” With a seductive grin, Finn spun her around and held her close to him.

“You make me speechless.” It was a perfect moment. As they danced, she kept her eyes on him and ignored everyone else in the ballroom. Let people talk about them; Colleen didn’t care. She loved Finn and nothing would ever separate them again.

When the band took a break, Finn said, “Are you ready to leave? The only thing left is the auction, and I don’t have to be here for that.”

She was more than ready to leave. “Can I go to the restroom first?”

“Sure. I’ll wait for you in the lobby.”

“I’ll be right back,” she said with a quick kiss.

CHAPTER 44

FINN

While Finn waited for Colleen, he took a quick look at his phone. All in all, the evening was a success. Colleen had enchanted everyone he introduced her to. Even Reed was impressed, and that was a huge relief. He slipped his phone back into his pocket.

“You’re leaving?” Carmen asked.

“Oh, hi, Carmen. Yeah. I’m waiting for Colleen.”

“The band’s going to do an entire set dedicated to Michael Jackson and I wanted to take you away from Colleen for a dance.”

“I’m sorry,” he said, with a hand over his heart, “I’m an old-fashioned guy, and it wouldn’t be fair to—” A familiar booming voice interrupted him. He spun around in alarm, anxiously scanning the lobby until he spotted him. His father was here.

“Excuse me,” he said hastily to Carmen before he walked toward all the commotion.

“Don’t touch me,” his father said, shrugging off a woman from the reception desk. He wore a tux, and Camille was dressed in a flashy red-sequined gown. Did they actually think they could crash the party?

“We have every right to be here.” His father took out an envelope from his pocket and threw it at the receptionist.

He would have to get him out of here before he caused a scene. Finn moved forward. “You need to leave.”

His father waved a hand in the air. “Here’s my loser son.”

Finn recognized that tone and slurred speech. In the past, Finn would have cowered when his father taunted him like this, especially in public. It was humiliating, but no more. His father was an abusive drunk and responsible for his own behavior.

Finn turned to Camille. “Take him home,” he said through gritted teeth.

Camille looked confused. “The invitation was delivered by a courier just a few hours ago.”

This must be some kind of joke. No one on the board would invite him.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Reed demanded, running up to them.

This situation was spinning out of control.

Reed glared at Finn. “You’ve got to get him out of here.”

“I’m trying. Give me a chance to talk to him.” Finn reached out to take his father’s arm.

“Get out of my way,” his father shouted, pushing Finn away and then stumbling back into Camille.
