“You didn’t answer my question.” Finn’s voice was quiet, but firm.

“I said I don’t know yet.” She gave him a quick look.

“Um…you want to explain why you’re pissed off?” Sean asked, his hands on his hips. “Ana and I made dinner for you. The least you can do is to be polite, otherwise we’ll get out of your way so you can enjoy your bitchy company all by yourself.”

Finn got to his feet. “Thanks for the beer.”

“You’re not leaving,” Sean said, pointing at Finn. “What’s going on between you two?” Sean asked Colleen.

“I’m just not in the mood for a party.” She hated to sound sullen, but her day had been difficult. She needed this job, but she had plenty of doubts about selling art.

“Can I talk to you alone?” Finn whispered to Colleen.

Sean grabbed Ana’s hand. “We’ll be right back. We’re going to the bodega to pick up another avocado.”

“We already have too many avocados,” Ana said.

“You can never have too many avocados for guacamole,” Sean said as they left.

Colleen refilled her champagne glass. It looked like she would have to have that talk now rather than later. “Why are you here?”

“I was invited.” He moved closer to her by the breakfast bar.

She took a deep sip of champagne, trying not to look at Finn.

“Talk to me, Colleen. If you want me to leave, I will, but first tell me what’s wrong.”

She gave him a quick glance. “I met your neighbor after I left your loft last night.”

“Ashley,” he said in a clipped voice.

Holding her glass near her lips, she said, “You told me you weren’t dating anyone.”

His eyebrows shot up. “I’m not.”

Colleen snorted into her glass. “Ashley practically salivated when I told her we were old family friends.”

“Look at me.”

Colleen turned to face Finn.

“I’ve fucked Ashley, but we’re not dating.”

She closed her eyes for a moment. “That’s exactly what I expected you to say.”

“I was honest with you last night. We’re both adults. I have a past and so do you.”

“My past is none of your business,” Colleen snapped, placing her glass on the counter. “Besides,my pastis nowhere near as lively as yours,” she muttered, once again bombarded by feelings of inadequacy of all the women he’s been with.

“They don’t matter to me. I told you that ten years ago. It was true then and it’s still true today.”

Colleen looked carefully at Finn. It was time to believe him or walk away, because she couldn’t go forward unless she trusted him.

He leaned in closer to say, “There’s only one woman I’ve ever been interested in, and she sure as hell isn’t Ashley.” His voice was raw, and his eyes burned with an intensity that shot straight to her heart.

Finn’s words hung in the air, urging her to ask the only question that mattered right now. “Who is she?” she asked, her breath quickening.

Finn gave her a slow smile. “Can’t you guess?”
