“Gee, thanks. I’m flattered, Misterquixotry,” she said, using her fingers to make air quotes.

“It’s a legitimate word. You protested, we looked it up, and you lost. End of story.” He grinned at her snarky comment. “I’ll be happy to have a rematch.”

“You’re on.”

“I’m already looking forward to it.” He poured them each a mug of coffee. “How do you like your coffee?”

“Black is fine.”

Finn came around the counter to hand her a mug.

Colleen took a sip. “Wow. This is so much better than a Keurig.” She peeked up at him, running a hand through her tangled hair. “I must look awful.”

Finn took a lock of hair between his fingers and tucked it behind her ear. “You look beautiful. Thanks for staying with me.”

She gave him a shy smile. “It was fun.”

Colleen was a mystery to him. So sexy with their flirting last night, and yet she was holding herself back from him. Finn placed a hand on her cheek and leaned in to give her a chaste kiss.

She pulled him closer and deepened the kiss.

Someone pounded on the door.

Finn didn’t care who was banging on the door, he didn’t want to let her go.

Colleen broke the kiss and got to her feet. “You have to answer the door.”

“Stay here,” Finn said with a quick kiss. “I’ll get rid of whoever it is.” He sincerely hoped it wasn’t Ashley.

Colleen gave him a nod as Finn walked to the door.

“It’s about time,” Sean said, bursting inside. “I thought you’d kidnapped my sister.”

“Good morning, Sean,” Colleen said, sipping her coffee.

Sean looked back and forth between them. “Are you guys dating now?”

Finn glanced at Colleen and waited for her to answer the question.

“We’re taking it one step at a time, but thanks for being a nosy little brother.”

“I think it’s great.” Sean turned to Finn. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you. Have you seen the news?” His expression was serious.

Dread spiraled through Finn. “No. What’s up?”

Sean pulled out his phone. “Your father’s making headlines.”

Colleen took a quick look at Sean’s phone. “Oh, no.”

Finn grabbed the phone and scanned the interview his father gave to a New York gossip magazine. “My Life Now” was the title, but the only words that mattered to Finn was his father’s quote: “My son is a loser.” It was said in the context of Finn’s work for a nonprofit, suggesting that helping others was a waste of anybody’s time. This was a predictable response. At least his father’s insult was limited to Finn’s work and hadn’t gotten personal—yet.

“Are you okay?” Colleen asked with concern.

“I don’t like being in a rag like that, but yeah, I’m okay.”

“Do you want me to send him a cease and desist letter?” Sean asked.

“Are you kidding? He’d hold a press conference and tell the world I’m a coward and can’t take a little criticism.” Finn ran a hand through his hair as he considered his options. “The best thing to do is to ignore him. He’s just looking for attention.”
