“Did you find something you like?” he asked with a kiss on her cheek.

“Yes,” Colleen said as he brushed his knuckles against her cheekbone.

“Colleen will be the most beautiful woman at the gala. The dress is perfect for her,” Stella said with pride.

Her cheeks burned with Finn’s intense gaze. They had only made love a few hours ago, and he looked at her like he wanted to take her to the nearest dressing room and fuck her senseless. To be honest, she was tempted to drag him in there herself.

A dressing room door slammed open. “Don’t tell me to calm down!” I had an appointment and I demand to see Stella this minute or I’m going to Valentino’s.”

Colleen pulled her attention from Finn to see the same rich blonde stalking down the hallway in their direction.

“Ms. Dalton,” Stella cooed in an attempt to placate this spoiled brat.

With a brief glance at Stella, the blonde marched up to Finn and slapped him, the crack echoing through the store.

Colleen recoiled; her eyes focused on the blonde. Who was she?

“You’re a fucking prick, Finn O’Connor,” the blonde snarled, her face red in anger.

“And you’ve always been such a lady, Lauren,” Finn said, rubbing his cheek. “Thank you, Stella,” he said with surprising composure.

“Yes, thank you,” Colleen mumbled.

“It’s my pleasure,” Stella said, with a wary glance to Lauren.

“Let’s go.” Finn took Colleen by the hand.

“Who’s Lauren?” Colleen asked, struggling to keep up with his pace.

“She’s not important,” he said as they left the store.

Colleen wrenched her hand away. “Don’t ignore me, Finn.” Clearly, there was a history between Lauren and Finn, and Colleen deserved to know exactly what it was. She believed Finn loved her, but she couldn’t stop jealousy from winding its way through her mind with all the different scenarios that would cause Lauren to hate Finn.

He nodded to the valet and helped Colleen into a waiting car at the curb.

Finn got settled into the car, his eyes focused straight ahead, and his lips set in a tight line. “Please take us back to O’Connor Tower,” he said to the driver.

“Why did she slap you?”

“Not here.” He lifted his chin to the driver.

Colleen said in a low whisper, “Tell me now, or I swear to God, I’ll make the driver stop the car and I’llget out.”

He turned to her in frustration. “She’s my stepmother’s niece.”

“Why did she slap you?”

“That’s a lot more complicated,” he muttered, turning his head away.

They rode the rest of the way in tense silence. Her mind ran wild with possible scenarios for what would make Lauren so angry at Finn. Did this outburst have something to do with his father? Or, was it far more serious?

CHAPTER 41

FINN

Once they were back in the loft, Finn slammed the door behind him and walked directly to the window, staring out without saying a word. He was tense as he debated how best to tell Colleen this story. Colleen had been through a lot in the last few days and they were closer than ever. His stomach twisted with worry that what he would tell her would change the course of their relationship.

“Talk to me, Finn. What’s happening?”
