"Oh, you smooth talker," Midge replies. "Go on and wash up. You want to make a good impression on Boone’s friend. For Boone’s sake if not your own. She hasn’t brought a friend home since..." Her voice trails off and I know what she’s about to say.

Although I’m thirty years old and the head of Montana’s largest privately owned ranch, I do as the housekeeper tells me and stop by the bathroom in the hall and wash up. I take a look at myself in the mirror. My shoulders do look different when they aren’t hunched up around my ears.

"She’s good for you."Both brothers said so.

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind another night with the little kitten. Who was more like a hellcat.

I finish up in there, even try to smooth out my hair, before heading for the sunny dining room. When the whole family, or what’s left of it, is home, we try to have meals together, though it’s not always possible with each of us running a different part of the ranch.

I'm about to walk through the doorway when Boone and her friend come around the corner. I can hear them laughing before I see them and I wait, happy to hear my sister's carefree giggles. She might be all grown up and graduated from college, but she's still my baby sister.

They turn the corner and my heart stops.

Curly hair. Lush lips. Rounded hips just right for hanging on to while fucking from behind.

Ho-lee shit.

My little kitten is Boone's best friend. The only person from college she ever talks about. All the funny stories Boone has told about the two of them come rushing to mind.

As well as another thought.

I'm so fucked.

She hasn't noticed me yet. She's still looking at Boone and the expression on her face is relaxed and happy. The two of them are clearly enjoying themselves.

Then she looks up. Our eyes meet. She stumbles on the carpet-less floor. I rush forward and catch her before she topples. The scent of her assails me. Her skin is hot, familiar beneath my hands, but she jumps back like I'm on fire.

Those are probably the flames of hell licking at me for what I've done.

Slept with my sister's best friend.

CHAPTER SIX

KIT

No, no. No! This cannot be happening.

I feel myself topple forward and I pray the floor will open and I'll be able to fall through, all the way to the depths of hell. It will be a reprieve from the reality I've found myself in.

The one thing that Boone has worked so hard to avoid and I've done it. Donehim.

And then, before I faceplant on the floor, his strong hands are on me and damned if my body doesn't react. For an instant I'm transported mere hours into the past where we were anonymous strangers enjoying ourselves in the penthouse suite.

But the dawn has broken and everything is different now.

We stand and face each other awkwardly. I see the panic in his eyes. Sure I have the same expression. I take a deep breath and remember my mother's motto.Never let them see you sweat.

I straighten myself and brush my hands down over my skirt, then take a step toward him, arm outstretched in my best finishing school form and say, "It's so nice to meet you. I'm Katherine d'Winter, but everyone calls me Kit."

I can see he's a bit off kilter but catches on quickly. "It's nice to meet you, Kit—" he says and stops himself before he utters the term he used so many times last night.Kitten.

He grasps my hand and again the traitorous pulses in my core ignite. "I'm Adam," he replies and releases my hand, though it felt like he held it a moment longer than proper manners dictate.

Or am I the one who clung to him?

"Welcome to North Starr Ranch," he says. "Boone doesn't invite many friends here. You must be special."

Oh god. Is it just me, or is there a sexy glint in his eye when he says 'You must be special?'
