“Talk to you later, sis,” Kat said.

“Later.”

I hit End and set my phone down. Then, I turned to my computer but just stared at it.

My sister’s words reverberated in my head. Even with her worries, I couldn’t help but think that maybe sleeping with a stranger was exactly what I needed. No commitment, no small talk. I could just fuck him and leave.

I pushed my chair back from my desk and headed straight for our Records department.

Gina was sittingat her desk when I walked into her department. She glanced up at me and back to her computer screen before doing a double take when she must have realized it was me.

I ran my eyes across the room before asking, “Do you have a minute?”

Sighing, Gina leaned back in her chair and said, “I knew I shouldn’t have said anything in front of you.”

This was not starting off well. In my head, I had pictured her to be as willing to help me out as she had been with Mara.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re here to talk to me about what happened in the elevator, aren’t you?” She shook her head. “I told myself you were going to rat me out or chastise me, but you made me think you didn’t care.”

I held up my hands. “I’m not going to do either of those things.”

“You aren’t?”

“No.”

“Oh.” Gina smiled. “Okay. What do you need me to pull for you then?”

I looked behind me one more time and leaned toward her. “I’m not here for work,” I said in a low voice.

“Okaaaay.” She drew out the word as if she thought it was strange that I was there for a personal reason, which was understandable. Gina and I had never been anything but colleagues. “Are you going to tell me why you’re here then?”

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My idea to ask her for help had seemed reasonable as I walked over here, but the thought of saying it out loud now seemed ridiculous.

Gina picked up a stack of papers and straightened them by patting the bottom edge on her desk. “It was nice talking to you, but if you don’t mind, I need to get some work done before I go home tonight.”

I mentally rolled my eyes at myself. If I could negotiate deals with other lawyers and get up in front of a courtroom full of jurors and a judge, I could ask for this favor.

“I need you to hook me up with a D appointment.”

Gina’s jaw dropped, and she slowly lowered the papers back to her desk. “Are you for real?”

“Yes.” I didn’t think I had given the impression I was joking.

“But…”

“But what?” I asked testily. I couldn’t wait to hear what she thought about me.

With a quick shake of her head, she said, “Nothing.” Her brow furrowed. “You really want me to find a guy for you to…”

“Have sex with? Yes. Do you think you can do that for me?”

“I mean, I can…”
