I went to the break room to get a Diet Pepsi out of the vending machine. I’d had coffee already that morning, but I needed more caffeine.

I was almost to the break room when I recognized Gina’s voice. I quickly stopped, turned around, and headed back the way I had come. I could find something to drink somewhere else. That was, until I heard Gina say something that made me stop in my tracks.

“We’re moving in together,” she said.

“No way. You two haven’t been dating that long. I remember when you were telling me about your first date.”

“I know. But we spend so much time together, and I love him. He’s the best boyfriend, and if we’re going to get married someday, I need to live with him first.”

I could hear the smile in Gina’s voice, and I felt sick for two reasons. My heart was breaking again, and Gina’s was going to be too. I was also pissed that Dominick had lectured me about lying to him when I hadn’t, and he was doing the same to me and Gina.

My phone buzzed in my hand.

D Appointment:Are you on your way?

I gave my phone the finger because I didn’t want to say anything before the hearing started. What was that old saying? You don’t shit where you eat. And I was not going to be blamed for him not getting custody.

Me:Soon. I’ll be there ASAP.

The stupid white lie somehow made me feel better, but only for a minute. I hated that I was getting satisfaction out of being petty.

I let out a breath of frustration.

This wasn’t me. Being jealous, heartbroken, and petty. I wasn’t that kind of person when it came to men. This needed to end.

I spun around and marched into the break room.

“Gina,” I said, interrupting her conversation with someone.

The two of them were standing against the kitchen counter. The other woman turned, and I saw it was Mara.

Of course it was Mara. She and Gina had been there at the beginning. It seemed fitting they would be here at the end.

“What’s up, Stern?” Gina said, putting her hand on her hip.

“Gina, I really hate to be the one to tell you this, but your boyfriend is cheating on you.”

Mara gasped.

Gina dropped her hand and stood straight. “Excuse me?” she said.

I didn’t know if her tone was one ofhow dare you accuse my man of such a thingorwhat do you know, and when are you going to tell me everything.

“I know we’re not friends, and you’re going to hate me now, but I can’t let you move in with…him.” I couldn’t say Dominick’s name. Keeping it to pronouns made it less difficult to say.

“And how do you know this?” Gina asked.

Okay, she didn’t believe me, so I was just going to have to say it.

“Because we slept together last night. Not like sleeping. You know, the other kind. Sex. I mean, we did sleep together, too, but that’s not the point. The point is, he was with me all night, and we had sex.” I raised my eyebrows. “A lot. And it was unprotected.” I shook my head sadly. “I’m sorry, but he’s not faithful to you.”

Mara looked back and forth between the two of us. “Wow. I did not take you for the other woman,” she said to me.

“I didn’t know I was, okay? I hadn’t seen him in two months.” I lifted my hand toward her friend. “I mean, Gina was the one who set me up with him. How was I supposed to know they’d fall in love?” I dropped my arm and looked at Gina. “It is really weird that you would set me up with a guy you like. Also, if you love him so much, why aren’t you at his hearing? Why aren’t you supporting him?”

That last part bothered me. Cheater or not, Dominick was the only dependable person Spencer had in his life, and Dominick was a good brother.

Gina put her hand on her stomach, threw her head back, and laughed.
