“Absolutely.” She plopped down on the couch across from Julian’s desk. “Thanks, Pop.”

“I’ll check in on you both at the end of the week.” Dave closed the door behind him.

Julian took a calming breath before staring down at Angelina.

“Surprised?” She laughed.

“Very.” He leaned against his desk, trying not to appear too agitated. “Why do you want to work with me? We have several other attorneys here you could assist.”

“Because I already know how compatible we are. We always got along in the office. I’m very serious about my career, and I know how much I could benefit from working with you.”

“Why did you go to Sapphire?”

“I wanted to see you.”

“You could have come here to see me.”

“I didn’t want to see you in a work setting.” She stood and moved to stand in front of him. “I wanted to see you at the club because we always had so much fun there.” She raised her hand, but before she touched him she asked, “May I?”

“No, you may not.”

“Please.” She dropped her gaze. “I’ll kneel for you if that’s what you want.”

“I don’t want that from you.” He tilted her chin so she had to look him in the eyes. “We need to be real clear if we’re going to work together. I’m in a relationship with a woman I care very deeply for.”

“A submissive?”

“My girlfriend.”

“What?” She gasped. “You don’t do girlfriends. You always made that really clear.”

“People change.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“Really?”

“I know people change,” she said. “But I don’t believe you gave up your lifestyle for a girlfriend. You’re dominant to the core.”

“I didn’t say I gave it up,” he told her. “I’ve just fallen in love with a woman who craves my dominance.”

“You’re dating your submissive?”

“I’m dating a woman who likes to play. We’ve been exploring, but the BDSM lifestyle doesn’t define us. If we’re going to work together, you have to respect I’m in a committed relationship and there is no chance that you and I are going to be resuming any past activities. Do you understand?”

“I won’t lie. I’m disappointed.” She backed away from him. “You’re one of the reasons I wanted to come home from California. I’ve been doing some thinking this past year, and I realized what we had was perfect. I just couldn’t see it then. I pushed too hard, and you don’t respond to that.”

“If I recall correctly, I wasn’t dominant enough for you.” He had enjoyed their time together, but the longer they stayed together, the more she craved from him. She wanted his dominance to carry over into the work place, and he wasn’t willing to accommodate her. She wanted a full-time arrangement.

“I should have respected your position. You wanted to keep your private life separate from your professional one. I understand that now. I realize what a good thing we had. I miss you.”

“I enjoyed what we had, but it’s over.” He needed to make sure she understood that there wouldn’t be anything other than a working relationship between them. “I’ll work with you because I respect your grandfather. He put much faith in me when he made me partner at such a young age. I owe him my career and my success. I’ll grant his wish, but you have to help me with that. You can’t make this difficult for either of us.”

“You’re a brilliant attorney. You’ve made my grandfather a lot of money these past few years. He’s going to leave the firm to you when he retires.”

“Perhaps, but I’m just here to do my job. I meant what I said when I told him I work alone, but it’s obvious he’s going to make me work with you. I don’t mind doing that, but you have to assure me that you know there won’t ever be anything else between us. Know the boundaries going into this.”

“Your relationship is that serious?”
