He nodded.

“Okay.”

“Okay?” That seemed a little too easy.

“You’ve always been good to me. You taught me a great deal in and out of the bedroom. I was able to make the move to California and practice law there because of your confidence in me. You’re a good Dom, but you’re an even better lawyer. I won’t screw up this opportunity. I need to work with you so I can show my grandfather I’m serious about my career choice. I want to make him proud.”

“Then we’ll start tomorrow. Join me around eight-thirty AM. I’ll brief you on a few things, and then you can come with me to depose a witness.”

“Thank you.” She leaned up and kissed his cheek, taking him by surprise. “Sorry, I’m just excited to work with you.”

“Let’s not make a habit out of that sort of thing.”

“Right. Totally professional. I promise.” She headed for the door, but before leaving she asked, “What’s her name? The lucky woman in your life?”

“Kayla.” He smiled. “And I’m the lucky one.”

* * *

Kayla had cometo the penthouse that evening to find Julian making a meal. That was a surprise. They usually ordered in or met someplace quiet. After dinner he suggested they go to bed, but not to sleep. They spent most nights making love and falling asleep in one another’s arms, but tonight had been different. Julian didn’t go into his study and work, as he usually did. Tonight, he was more attentive to her. She wasn’t complaining, but she could tell there was something on his mind.

She gazedup as Julian closed his eyes. As he moved in and out of her, he threaded his bottom lip through his teeth, tensing just as he let go and came inside her.God, he’s beautiful. He lowered himself, kissing her softly before slipping from her and rolling onto his side. She turned to face him.

“Feel better?”She traced his lips with her fingertip as she gazed into his eyes.

“Being with you always makes me feel better.”

“Not that you’ll get any arguments from me, but tonight it took you three times to settle down.” She’d have sex with him three more times if that was what he needed. “Stressful day?”

“You’re very attentive to me, aren’t you?”

“I’m learning you.” She was proud to admit that she was getting a handle on her very complicated guy. “It’s my job to know.”

“You know me better than anyone ever has.” He kissed her fingers. “I did have a stressful afternoon. I wanted to talk to you about it.”

“A case?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“A colleague has recently come back to town and I’ve been asked to work with her.”

“You don’t want to?”

“She’s a good attorney. When we first worked with one another, she was fresh out of law school and I mentored her.” He stared off, deep in thought. “In more ways than one.”

“Oh.” She didn’t like the sound of that.

“Her name is Angelina Crowley.”

“As in Crowley, Madison, and Anders?” Now she really didn’t like where this was headed.

“She’s Dave Crowley’s granddaughter. We explored the lifestyle together, but it didn’t work out for us.”

“Why not?”

“I told you once before that there were women that I wasn’t dominant enough for. She was one of them. She needed a constant arrangement. I wasn’t capable of providing her with what she wanted. It was best to move on.”
