“Like twenty-four-seven?”

“Yes, and because of our working relationship, I didn’t want to mix the two. I also felt she was getting too attached to me, and as you know, before you, I didn’t do long-term.”

“What happened?”

“We ended things amicably. We continued to work together for a brief time after, but she chose to relocate to California. The firm has a small branch there. We stayed in touch for a bit, but as both of our lives became more hectic, we became less in contact. Then I met you and I never gave her much thought after that.”

“I trust you, if that’s what you’re stressed over.” How could she not? He had allowed another man to enter the playroom with them. She’d be a hypocrite if she freaked out over him working with someone he’d been with long before the two of them were together.

“I appreciate that, but there is something else.”

“You’re not going to ask her to join us in the playroom, are you?”

“Of course not.” He laughed. “It’s already a little crowded in there. Wouldn’t you say?”

“There is a lot going on in there.”

“Angelina went to Sapphire a few days ago, before I even knew she was back in town. She asked Blake to set her up with me. He told her that was impossible, as I’m in a committed relationship and have no desire for anyone other than you.”

“And now you have to work with her? That could be awkward.”

“I set her straight today, and she seemed to understand. She said she was more interested in working professionally with me. Resuming our sexual relationship wasn’t why she had come back.”

Kayla cringed when she thought about Julian and another woman, especially now that the other woman would be working with him every day and had expressed an interest in him.

“Do you believe her?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Something doesn’t seem right. She gave up too easily.” His jaw tensed. “But right now, I’m stuck. Dave doesn’t know we have a history. I’d like to keep it that way. I don’t like to bring my personal life into my professional one. I made that mistake when I entered into an agreement with Angelina. It worked out because we were able to end things and no one got hurt.”

“You’d rather not work with her.”

“Dave has done a lot for me. He trusted me with his firm. He gives me all the high-profile cases.”

“You’re good at your job.”

“He seldom asks me for anything, and I don’t want to say no to him, but I needed you to know who she was and what she meant to me.”

“Does she mean anything to you now?”

“Absolutely not. She was a temporary submissive to me. Like the others, I had no emotional connection to her. It was sex. When we realized we wanted different things, we moved on. I’ve never portrayed myself to be anything more than I could be. Even today, I made it clear there was no future for Angelina and myself.”

“You’re a professional.” She pressed her lips to his, trying to ease his stress. “I’m sure if she gets out of line you’ll put her in her place.”

“Not the same way I’d put you in your place though.” He smirked.

“Then I’d have to go all dominant on your ass.”

“Language.” He opened his mouth in shock. “There’s only room for one Dominant in this bed and you’ve agreed to my terms.”

“I’d agree to them every day for the rest of my life if it meant being with you the way we are right now.”

“I love you.” He kissed her, lingering against her mouth as he spoke. “Thank you for understanding about Angelina.”

“I know what your job means to you. You respect Dave. You need to work with his granddaughter, and I don’t have a problem with that. I trust you as much as you trust me.”

“Then there is no way we could ever go wrong.” He pushed her onto her back as he kissed her neck. “Are you tired?” He trailed his hand along her thigh. “I don’t want you to be sore tomorrow.”

“Yes, you do.” She giggled. “You pride yourself on it.”
