“You’re allowed. This whole setting can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re taking it slow.” He kissed her forehead. “I’m proud of you.”

“I love you.”

“Why don’t you lie back?” He pushed her onto the pillows. “And let me show you how much I love you.”

“Okay.” She grinned, needing him more now than ever.

He lowered himself onto her, taking her face between his hands. “You can vocalize all you want with me.”

“Soundproof room?”

“You know it.”

Just like that, Julian had put all her insecurities to rest. He would make everything right.

Chapter 8

Julian pulled into the lot and handed his keys to the valet before coming around and helping Kayla out of the car. Taking in her smooth legs, toned arms, and flawless skin, he wished more than anything they would be dining alone tonight. Instead, they would be accompanied by several associates from his law firm, including Angelina. It had been a few weeks since she had returned to New York, and so far she’d kept things professional. He hoped she would continue that trend in Kayla’s presence.

“Sorry you have to be here tonight.” He placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her inside the restaurant.

“Where else would I be?”

When she smiled at him, the displeasure of having to attend a work function faded into the background. Normally, he didn’t have such feelings for his colleagues. He was proud of his firm and the work they were accomplishing, but lately they had been so busy that he couldn’t help but think he had been neglecting Kayla.

“I know I’ve been busy these past few weeks. I’m hoping it will settle down soon, but I’d be lying if I told you that.”

“Your work is important to you.”

“Not as important as you are to me.” He took her hand as they walked into the private dining area. “You know that, right?”

“Of course I do.” She stretched up and kissed his cheek. “You don’t have to explain. I knew who you were before we got together.”

Just as he was about to tell her how incredibly fortunate he was to have such an amazing woman by his side, Angelina greeted them.

“Julian.” She leaned in and kissed him softly on the lips. His reaction was slow because he hadn’t anticipated such an intimate greeting. “We didn’t think you’d ever get here.”

Kayla tightened her grip on his hand when Angelina ran her hand along his lapel. He straightened his posture and glared down at her, hoping she’d recognized his annoyance. So much for her acting professional in front of Kayla.

“Angelina.” He stepped back, creating some distance. “I’d like you to meet—”

“Kayla,” Angelina finished for him. “Julian has told me so much about you. You’re just as stunning as he described.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Kayla said. “I’ve heard much about you too.”

“Well, we all have so much in common, don’t we?” Angelina smoothed out her long, blonde hair before tossing it over her shoulder. “I’ve been keeping some of the partners company until you arrived. They can’t stop singing your praises over the Hollister case.”

“Did I hear you mention the Hollister case?” Dave came over to where they had gathered. “Julian, Kayla.” He nodded. “I’m thrilled you could join us tonight.”

“Thank you, Mr. Crowley.” Kayla shook his hand. “It’s good to see you again.”

“Please, call me Dave, and it’s you I should be thanking.”

“Me?” When Kayla shot Dave her sparkling smile, Julian found himself lost in her eyes. “What did I do?”

“You’re so tolerant of Julian’s work schedule.” Dave patted Julian’s shoulder. “I know we’ve been keeping him from you.”

“I hope you don’t mind sharing him with me, Kayla.” Angelina hooked her arm in Julian’s, causing him to tense.
