“Excuse me?” Kayla responded.

“We’re going to be so busy with this case, that he’ll be spending most of his time with me.” Angelina looked up at him. “Isn’t that right? I hope you prepared Kayla for your long nights away from that posh penthouse of yours. You have the most spectacular view of the city from up there.”

“You’ve seen it?” Kayla asked.

“Quite a few times.” Angelina was staking her claim, and Julian wasn’t impressed.

“I’m sure your grandfather can find other opportunities for you in the firm.” Julian subtly moved away from Angelina. “Right now, the Hollister case is my main priority.”

“That’s what we were talking about before you arrived,” Dave said. “Angelina has told me how much she is benefitting from you and all the time you’re spending with one another.”

“Julian is a fabulous teacher.” Angelina smirked at Kayla. “You have no idea the knowledge he possesses in all things.”

Fuck!

“Maybe we should find our table and I’ll get a drink.” Julian squeezed Kayla’s hand. “I could use a drink,” he mumbled. “Right now.”

“In a few moments,” Dave said. “I’d like to borrow Kayla if you don’t mind.”

“Kayla?” Julian didn’t want to be away from her. Not before he could make sure she was okay with this whole shitty encounter with his newest colleague.

“There are some people over there who know the Judge, and I’d like to introduce Kayla to them.” Dave nodded at Kayla. “Will you accompany me?”

“Of course.” Kayla let go of Julian’s hand and took Dave’s arm. “Why don’t you get us something to drink? I’ll meet you at the table in a few minutes,” Kayla assured Julian. “Okay?”

“If you’re sure.” Julian concentrated on her eyes, but he didn’t see any irritation in them.

“I’m fine.”

“I’ll take good care of him, Kayla.” Angelina stepped forward. “We need to say hello to a few people ourselves.”

“Perfect,” Dave said. “For now, I’ll enjoy the company of this lovely woman on my arm.”

Kayla laughed as she walked away with him, holding her head high and looking more eloquent than any other woman in the restaurant. Once they were alone he’d have to commend her on her ability to handle this ridiculous situation.

“I thought they’d never leave.” Angelina took Julian’s hand, but he quickly led her out to the terrace, not wasting any time. “Do you want to be alone?”

“What the hell are you doing?” He moved closer to her, backing her against the railing. “Don’t think for a second I didn’t know what you were doing.”

“There’s the man I’ve been searching for since I got back into town.” She reached up and touched his jaw, but he pulled away. “I thought you’d gone soft on me.”

“Stop it,” he demanded.

“Will you punish me if I don’t?”

“What has brought this on?”

“She’s too young for you.” Angelina motioned to the dining area. “She can’t handle you.”

“You don’t know anything about her. Seeing me with Kayla, is that what this is about?”

“Your sub can’t handle you. That’s a problem, or at least it will be when your infatuation with her goes away.”

“She isn’t my sub.”

He tried to hold back the anger over her behavior, reminding himself that he couldn’t discipline her. He was walking a fine line. He didn’t need to encourage Angelina’s erratic behavior, but he had to put her in her place.

“She’s my girlfriend.”
