Epilogue Two

Julianna

“Juju, please don’t do this. Just because it was a dare doesn’t mean you have to follow through with it,” my best friend, all-around band nerd, Rayna tells me. She’s shy and likes to hide in the background. I’m the opposite. I like loud music, singing at the top of my lungs, dancing around everywhere, and anything musical related I can get my hands on. Which brings me to the dilemma we are in now. Me, standing on a table in the middle of the lunchroom about to belt out “Popular” from Wicked in front of the whole school.

“I have to. They told me I wouldn’t get up here and sing in front of the whole school. That I hide behind my drama club and would never amount to anything,” I say, shooting daggers at the cheerleading table, knowing they are laughing at me and not giving one ounce of care. If I’m going to put on a show for the whole school, you can bet your sweet ass it will be one hell of a show. I hear Rayna sigh, but when I look down, she’s pulling out the small bluetooth speaker she uses during brand practice, the things loud as shit, and putting on the musical version of the song I’m about to perform.

I start small, making the hiccup noises Kristin Chenoweth perfected in her days on broadway and move around the table, watching to make sure everyone is picking up their lunches as I walk to the far end of the table. When I turn around and hit a particularly high note, I start racing the way I came from the other side of the long, and thankfully, now empty, lunchroom table.

I use the eighteen years of gymnastics to flip me over and tumble down the table doing different flips and tricks as I go. I’m about to flip right off the table and land on my feet right beside where I was sitting earlier, but my foot slips on the last step. Damn, someone must have spilled some drink. I go flying over the edge, hearing the chorus of gasps as everyone realizes what’s about to happen. I’m about to land HARD right on my ass. I wince, closing my eyes tight, trying my best to break for the fall.

The next thing I know, there’s an arm wrapped around my back and one wrapped around my knee. I peek open my eyes to see one of my classmates, Brody, and possibly the hottest guy I’ve ever seen in my life, looking at me like I have a few screws loose. Which, let’s be honest, is probably the case. Still, the last person I wanted to witness my humiliation is the only guy I’ve ever had a crush on. The same guy glaring at me now while he sets me down on my feet and mutters.

“I’m going to whip your ass for that.”

My only response,

“Yes, please.”

The End
