CAMERON

“So you’re telling me that you’ve been nominated—”

“—The company’s been nominated.”

“The company’s been nominated for some national business award. That sounds like a big deal to me.”

Cam was walking with Emilia to his truck on his last day of being in her office. Telling her about the award his company was nominated for. His father’s company, but neither he nor Cam’s brother wanted to go, and Cam had drawn the short straw.

“It kinda is, if we win. Anyway, I was wondering if you’d like to go with me.”

“To an awards show?” They’d stopped at his truck. He held open the door for her and she looked up at him impishly. “Do I get to wear a gown and be glamorous?”

“It’s not the Oscars,” he grinned down at her before bending down to give her a lingering kiss on the lips.

“Mmmm,” she said when he pulled away. “Have you been waiting to do that all day?”

“Yes, and if you don’t hop in the truck, I can’t be held responsible for my actions, or us being arrested on lewd behavior charges.”

“So, this awards night, would that be a proper date? Are you asking me out on a date?”

“We had dinner together last night, and lunch for the last four days.” His pulse leapt at the thought of everything that had happened between them that week: her body pressed against his, hot looks across the office every time he managed to catch her eye.

“Ah, yes, but they were still not-dates.”

“How do you figure?” He pulled out from the carpark and left towards town.

“We hadn’t come up with a new agreement.”

“Okay,” he smiled at her across the cab. “Emilia Beyonce, will you do me the honor of being my date to a hopelessly boring awards night this Saturday?” He pulled onto the main road.

“This Saturday’s the first mural session at the youth center.”

“I know, but the show doesn’t start till eight, giving you three hours to get home and get ready. Well, two, actually cause it’s in Jacksonville. But only if you want to.”

“I’d love to. Pull up, please.”

“Huh, we’re not at your place yet.”

“No, I know, but I want to go to the art store.”

Shaking his head, amused, Cam found a park on the side of Ballantyne Avenue. Even in a small town like Esperance, that was almost impossible to do.

“You don’t have to wait for me,” she said as she opened the door and jumped out. “I’m gonna be ages.”

“Okay,” he chuckled. “I have to get this paperwork done. Talk later?”

“Sure. Bye!”

It took Cam a minute to realize that she actually had just left him, literally, on the side of the road. He jumped out of the truck and stalked after her, “Hey,” He wrapped his arms around her from behind and lifted her off the ground, making her squeal. “You forgot something?”

“Oh yeah?” She turned and his breath caught in his chest. Her chin was held high in defiance, her cheeks were flushed and her eyes all but sparkled up at him. He moved in closer, tilted his head to the side and kissed her passionately. Right there on the main street of Esperance. Someone whistled as they walked past them, but they barely registered.

“Stay at my place on Saturday,” he growled, breaking their kiss.

“Okay,” her eyes were heavy-lidded. “Okay,” she repeated, this time with more certainty in her voice. He thought she’d come up with reasons why it was a bad idea and when she didn’t, he felt the thrill of anticipation all the way down to his toes.

“Okay,” he said. “I’m going to go now. I’ll pick you up at six-thirty on Saturday?”
