She was sneaky.

People needed to stop underestimating her.

Lyra, that was. Vivian didn’t expect people to ever stop underestimating her.

She glanced down as she shortened her steps to match Lyra’s, only to catch her texting.

“Um, whatcha doing?”

“Nothing.”

Yeah, right. She took her elbow and steered her around the raised block Lyra tripped over when shewaspaying attention.

“Try again.”

“Okay, just, you know, texting Spence.”

She sounded way too innocent.

“About me and Cam.” It wasn’t a question.

“Spence called it his first weekend here. And everyone likes to be encouraged when they’re right.” She lowered her phone and smiled. “He’s going to love having been right. Noah said Cam wasn’t that much of a masochist.”

“Hey!”

“Not that you’re not great, but honestly—you put out some pretty clear vibes that you’re not available.” Her phone dinged and she lifted it as she turned the screen back on. “Especiallyabout Cam. And Spence didn’t even know your history.”

Vivian noted the “didn’t even” was past tense.

“Anyway,” Lyra continued as if Vivian wasn’t going to push her into the shrubbery, “Spence thinks you guys are perfect for each other. He says that outsiders sometimes see things the most clearly.”

“Isn’t this the guy you had a war with because he called Starlight Harbor tacky?”

“That,” Lyra sniffed, “was before he saw it. Then he outsider-loved it.”

Cam

Cam carrieda tray with glasses and a pitcher of iced tea out to Noah’s deck, grinning at the very homeyness of it.

“Not a word. You’d be walking back and forth to get all this stuff and Skye gave it to me because she wanted to be helpful.”

Of course he wouldn’t say anything in front of Skye. She sometimes didn’t know when you were teasing her and when you weren’t, and they all loved her enough to only tease in ways that would absolutely not hurt her feelings.

“Dude, if it were just the little tray, that would be one thing. But I swear you’ve been hanging out with my mom for cozy cottage lessons.”

“If your mom taught that, the class would be packed, so I’d think twice about mentioning it in front of her.”

The man was not wrong.

Ding.

They all looked to where Spence leaned happily against the railing, typing away on his cell.

At the silence, he glanced up.

“So.” Spence smirked. “You thought in the middle of an argument was the best time to tell Vivian you’re still in love with her? Even I wasn’t that stupid.”
