His gaze dropped to my lap before looking back up at my face. “It was a very good dream.” Something flashed in his dark eyes.

I shook my head, smiling. “We should go inside,” I said, pulling away from him.

“Wait.” He grabbed my hand, stopping me from leaving the SUV. “I just…I need…”

I looked back at him when he didn’t finish his sentence.

His eyes were on his hand that was on top of mine. “What happened?” he asked, brushing his thumb back and forth along a long white scar that covered the side of my hand.

“We were riding our bikes and I was trying to keep up with the boys. I wasn’t paying attention and the front tire hit a rock at the perfect angle. I flipped over the handlebars and slid along some broken glass. I needed surgery and I can’t feel anything in the tip of my pinky,” I explained, wiggling my finger.

Much to my surprise, Tanner brought my hand up to his mouth and brushed his lips along the jagged scar.

My mouth dried.

He kissed the tip of my pinky. “Did you feel that?”

“Tanner,” I whispered, my stomach tumbling.

“I haven’t had a dream like that in a long time. Actually, I can’t remember the last time I had a dream like that. I don’t remember what it was about, but I know that it was…”

“A sexy dream?” I answered for him.

“Something like that,” he said, but never met my gaze. “Did I say anything?”

“You said no and then stop,” I said gently.

He nodded.

I pulled my hand away from him, not needing the twins to catch our little moment. “Something happened.”

“Yeah.” Tanner sighed, meeting my gaze. “I usually talk in my sleep if I’m medicated or drink too much. Or even when I get high. It’s why I don’t do drugs or drink really. I have no idea what I’d say, and I don’t like losing control.”

“And people could try and get secrets out of you or take advantage of your lack of control?”

He only nodded, cupping my hand that was on the seat beneath us.

I pulled my hand out from under his and placed it on top of his but not before I caught the look of panic in his dark eyes. I didn’t know what that was about, but I did know that it set off alarm bells. Not because I feared that he would hurt me but that he would hurt himself or someone else.

“How are you feeling?” I asked softly.

“Like hell.” His gaze dropped to our hands. “But this…”

A knock sounded on the window, making me jump. I pulled away from Tanner and opened the door. “What?”

Sammy only grunted, stuck a smoke between his lips, and started to walk toward the large clubhouse I had grown up in.

“I guess it’s time,” I muttered.

“Yeah.”

I stepped out of the vehicle, waiting for Tanner to do the same. “You good?”

He looked past me, a dark shadow passing over his face. “Yup. Fucking perfect.”
