“Uh…” I cleared my throat and rose from the couch. “It is.”

“Good night, Busy.”

“Good night, Tanner.” I stopped beside Cyrus. “Be nice to him.” Without waiting for a response, I headed up the stairs. Away from the man who told me he wanted me. Away from the man who had been the first I had ever been attracted to. One thing was right. I wanted him as well. But I wasn’t sure if that were even possible.

If ever at all.

(Tanner)

“What do you want with her?” Cyrus demanded once we were alone.

“Is your brother going to come back now that Busy went to bed?” I asked, almost expecting Sammy to jump out of the dark corners like the monsters in my head.

“No.” Cyrus narrowed his brows. “You leave Johnny alone.”

“Why do you call her that?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

Cyrus’s jaw clenched and then surprisingly, he sighed and moved to the spot beside me. “She’s named after our parents. I call her Johnny because no one else does and it’s her middle name. I also know that our dad would have liked having a little girl named after him.”

I was momentarily shocked by the confession.

Rumor had it that Cyrus wasn’t a talker. While Sammy fucked his way through anything that would open themselves to him, Cyrus was withdrawn and liked to swim in the bottom of a bottle.

Cyrus looked at me then, a slow smile creeping on his face. “You look shocked that I actually answered your question.”

“I was told that you’re not a talker.”

“Yeah and I was told that you’re a murderer.” He shrugged. “Guess we don’t know each other at all and shouldn’t listen to rumors, now should we?”

I looked away, the pain in my shoulder pulsing to the beat of my heart. I lifted my arm, trying to stretch and move it as best I could. Wasn’t like I had a physical therapist nearby or anything.

“Our mom would have liked you.”

My head whipped around.

“And maybe even our dad but he never would have admitted that,” Cyrus added. His face was impassive, almost as if he never said anything at all. When he rose from the couch without so much as a word, I wondered if maybe I had been dreaming it.

“Your mom,” I blurted.

Cyrus stopped, looking down at me over his shoulder. “Our mom wasn’t like everyone else. She saw something in our dad that other women hadn’t. I know that Busy sees something in you too. But I promise you, if you hurt her, you will have a war on your hands, Tanner. Is that something you’re willing to risk for easy pussy?”

I cringed over his crass words when it came to him talking about his cousin. “She’s not easy pussy.”

Cyrus jutted his chin forward. “Oh I know that. But do you?”

I stewed over his words. I hadn’t even known Busy for twenty-four hours and yet, we almost kissed. “I do.”

He cocked his head to the side. “Hurt her and I’ll send my brother after you. He’s been on edge lately. More so than usual.” He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I don’t even think sex will make him feel better.” He shook his head.

“Red,” I muttered, remembering Cyrus talking about this person earlier.

Cyrus grunted. “Pussy that my brother can’t have or at the very least, is driving him crazy.”

Before I could ask what he meant by that, he left the den, his heavy footsteps sounding up the stairs.

The weight of the night finally came crashing down on me.
