EPILOGUE

CHRISTY

Six months later

“Be sure to call us when you arrive home safely,” I say, hugging my aunt and uncle, wishing they didn’t have to go so soon.

“We will, darling,” Sandy replies, sliding her hand into Frank’s. She glances back up at Ardelby Castle, still marvelling at how impressive it is, before focussing back on Jakub, Leon and Konrad who hang back slightly, allowing us to say goodbye.

“Thank you for having us. Your home is beautiful.”

“Our offer still remains,” Jakub says, stepping forward to shake Frank’s hand and accept a kiss from Sandy. “We have plenty of room.”

Frank slaps Jakub on the back, grinning. “As much as your offer is tempting, we like having our own place. Besides, I’m not sure you’d appreciate us dancing in your kitchen at midnight in our undercrackers.”

“Oh I don’t know, it sounds entertaining,” Jakub jokes, grinning.

Frank chuckles. “Seriously though, we’re happy where we are. We have friends we don’t want to leave behind, and when you get to our age they’re few and far between.”

“Well, if you ever change your mind…” Konrad offers.

“We know where to find you,” Sandy finishes for him, her cheeks flushing a little as Konrad kisses her on the cheek. It’s sweet how giggly she gets around them. My Aunt Sandy has always been one to appreciate a good looking man, and now she has three more to flirt with. “Well, we should go!”

“See you soon, okay?” I say, pulling her in for one last hug before reluctantly letting her go.

“Before you know it!” she waves.

They climb into the car, and I don’t take my eyes off the vehicle until it turns left at the end of the long drive, disappearing from view.

“You okay?” Leon asks me, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me into his side as we head back to the castle. “I know how much you miss them when they’re gone.”

I lean into his hold. “I’m fine. Besides, it’ll only be a few weeks until Grim and Beast arrive with Iris.”

“They’re definitely coming then?” Konrad asks, holding open the door that leads into the entrance hallway. He looks surprised. Honestly, I am too. I never thought I’d see the day.

“Yep. She finally trusts you all enough to visit.”

“I’m not sure she’ll ever completely trust us,” Jakub says, heading towards the parlour to the right of the hallway.

“She’s a tough nut to crack, for sure, but believe me this is a huge step. Another ten years of good behaviour and you’ll have the perfect relationship,” I joke as we follow him into the room. I drop down onto the leather sofa beneath the window, Leon settling on my left and Konrad to my right. They both place a warm hand on each thigh whilst Jakub picks up a bottle of scotch.

“Anyone like a drink?”

“It’s only two o’clock, Jakub. Was it that bad having my aunt and uncle stay here?” I quip.

“No, not at all. I meant what I said. We have so much space here.”

“I know, I’m kidding,” I reply, my spine tingling as Leon’s hand slides higher up my thigh. Out of the corner of my eye I can see him smirking, we only had sex this morning but he’s insatiable. They all are. Not that I mind. Sex for us isn’t just about climaxing, it’s about forging a bond based on mutual pleasure and connection. It’s about loving each other in so many different ways. Though my favourite will always and forever be the tuning fork. Who knew?

“You might want to reconsider that drink,” Five says, stepping into the room.

“Hey, Five, what’s up?” I ask, greeting her with a smile. I’ve loved having her here, she’s been a wonderful friend to both Nala and me, and even though we wanted to call her by her real name, she made it perfectly clear that Five is her preference, and so Five she remains. “I thought you were spending the afternoon with Nala teaching her some knife throwing skills.”

“I was,” she replies, entering the room and shutting the door behind her, a serious expression on her face. “But something important came up.” She smoothes her hand over her jeans, an anxious tell that we’ve all come to recognise. Five rarely gets anxious, so whatever this is, it’s big.

“What is it?” Leon asks, tracking her as she walks across the room and takes a seat on the armchair opposite us.

“Charles just called. He’s picked up some chatter.”
