“And what chatter is that?”
“Looks like the honeymoon period is over. The Deana-dhe know you’re alive.”
“Fuck!” Konrad exclaims, swiping a hand over his face.
“We always knew this day would come. We’re prepared,” Jakub says, trying to reassure us all even though I see the flicker of concern in his eyes, too.
“That’s not the only thing that’s a cause for concern,” Five says, casting a look at me.
My skin immediately covers in goosebumps. “What’s the other thing?” I ask.
“Thirteen is missing.”
“What?!” I exclaim.
“What do you mean she’s missing?” Jakub says.
“I mean exactly that. Someone took her from the Deana-dhe.”
“Who?” Leon demands, shifting forward in his seat, all thought about sex gone from his mind, from mine too.
“Charles hasn’t been able to find that out, but he wanted you to know he’s looking into it as we speak. He’s going to call as soon as he finds out.”
Before we can even process this new information the telephone on the bureau trills with an incoming call, making me jump.
“It’s as though he’s tapped the room,” Jakub jokes darkly, striding over to the phone and snatching up the handset. For a moment he just listens, then he presses the loudspeaker button, a familiar voice echoing around the room.
“The Skull Brotherhood have Cyn,” Arden says, his voice tight. “And we need your help getting her back.”
