Hudson chuckles softly, dropping a kiss to the top of my head. “You know you can tell me how you really feel. I swear to you, Grim, I won’t breathe a word.”

“Not even to Bryce and Max… To Cal?”

“Not even them. Whatever you say in this room remains between us, okay?”

“Yeah, okay,” I reply.

“So?” he gently prompts.

“I’m in love with him,” I admit.

“Fuuuuck,” he replies.

“I know, right?”

“Are you certain?”

I pull back and give him anare-you-shitting-melook, because he knows I don’t love easily. I can’t even tell my best friend that I love him, even though he knows I do, that I’d do anything for our friendship, for him. “Yeah, I’m certain.”

“And Beast, how does he feel about you?”

“I think he feels the same way.”

Hudson raises his brows. “You think?”

“Tonight he tattooed the outline of my hand on his chest, right over his heart,” I explain, smiling a little at the memory. “That’s why I’m late. He took me with him to get it done because he needed my hand.”

Hudson grins. “I’d say that’s a pretty good sign.”

“It barely showed up against his other tattoos on his chest...”

“I don’t think that was the point, do you? He wantsyouto know it’s there.”

“I guess.”

“You don’t believe he likes you?”

I frown, thinking for a moment. “I do. It’s just…”

“It’s just easier to expect the worst from someone than it is to trust they’ll look after your heart, right?” he asks knowingly.

“Right,” I reply.

“Listen, Grim, I know trusting people isn’t easy for you, but for what it’s worth, I believe him. I see the way he is with you.”

“You do?”

“Yep, I do. In all honesty, I thought he was going to kill me that day I got concussed by Slimy who, by the way, has gone radio fucking silent. I think we scared him off?”

I keep my expression as neutral as possible. There’s no need to make Hudson an accomplice by telling him what actually happened to Dougie and his cronies. “Yep, we totally scared him off,” I agree.

“Not only that, Beast is a man of his word. If he’s made a promise to you then he won’t break it.”

“If he does, I’ll kill him,” I reply, only half joking.

“Fuck, Grim. Remind me not to get on your bad side. You’re more like your dad than you let on.”

“Lately I feel like I’m more of a disappointment for Carter than anything.”
