“Why? The way he was talking about you to the guy at Tales that night Beast mullered Clayton said otherwise. He dotes on you.”

“You mean the King?”

“Wait, that wastheKing… I didn’t realisehewas the guy who came on to you.”

“The one and only.”

“No wonder Beast was giving us all daggers. I thought he was still pissed at me for getting you involved with my shit. Sorry, Grim, if I’d have known, I wouldn’t have been so chill with him.”

“Don’t worry about it. So what was Carter saying about me that night, exactly?” I ask, my curiosity piqued.

“You know, how proud he is of you, that kind of thing.”

“Proud of me?” A laugh bursts out of my mouth. “Come on, Hud, what did hereallysay? You don’t need to soften the edges. I can take it. I’ve lived with Carter my whole life, remember?”

Hudson grimaces, and I know for sure Carter wasn’t complimenting me at all. “He mentioned you were still helping with the refit.”

“And?” I question, knowing there’s way more to this than that.

“And he said you’d make someone a fine wife one day…”

“Did he now,” I scoff, “And you agreed with him, I suppose?”

“Of course, I did,” Hudson replies, earning him a punch on the arm, which he takes without complaint.

“I’m notwifematerial. There’s more to me than that!”

“Of course, there is! But it’s not as if I could disagree with your dad. I do actually want to live to see my next birthday.”

“Fair enough,” I concede, because he has got a point. “And what did the King say?”

Hudson frowns and I roll my eyes.

“Shock, horror, he agreed with Carter too, right? I’m the perfect wifey material. Urgh, he’s such a prick. I feel for whoever ends up with that arsehole.”

“Actually, no. He kind of said the opposite, in fact.”

“What?” I ask, curious.

“He said that most women are born to fall in line, but there are some women who are born to break all the rules.”

“And the rules he’s referring to are made by men for men, right?” I scoff, shaking my head.

“Yeah, but then he said that the ones who were born to break the rules were the most fun because who wants a boring housewife anyway.”

“What was my dad thinking, going into business with him? Once I take over the company I’ll be cutting ties with that prick the second I get the chance.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” Hudson replies. “The sooner you’re free of that man, the better.”

“The sooner the better,” I echo, a sudden chill scattering down my spine.

My gut tells me the King is bad news, and my gut is never wrong.

Hudson puts his arm around my shoulder, squeezing me against his side. “Don’t worry about all of that shit now. First things first is your birthday party. Soon you’ll be the centre of attention. Are you looking forward to it?”

I pull a face. “Not really, but Carter is keen to throw me one, so I’m just going with the flow.”

“What can I get you for your birthday?” Hudson asks me. It’s sweet, but we both know money’s tight.
