“Of course I am. If Kate—”

“Grim,” he corrects me.

“IfGrimwants me to prove myself to her. I’ll do it. I’ll do anything she asks.”

“He’s under her thumb already, and he ain’t even won her back yet,” Connall remarks, earning him a punch to the bicep. He laughs, grabbing his glass and quietening his smartarse mouth with another glug of beer.

“Have a good night,” I say, eyeing the exit, more than ready to get the fuck out of here and drown my sorrows in the privacy of my own home.

“Wait,” Nancy says, quickly pulling out her phone.

“What’re you doing?”

“Don’t tell Grim it was me who gave you her number.”

“Then why are you giving me her number if you’re worried she’ll find out?” I ask as she pulls up Kate’s number and shows it to me.

“Because I’m concerned about her, and it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Now that you’re back I just thought that maybe—”

“Concerned why?” I interrupt.

“This goes no further, right?” she asks.

“It goes without saying,” I reply, looking between Dom and Connall who nod in agreement.

“Grim has been out of sorts recently. Preoccupied,” Nancy explains in a rush of words.

“Beast is back, makes total sense,” Connall points out.

Nancy shakes her head. “No, she’s been like this since Carter’s will was read. Something happened that day. A couple weeks later she went away for the weekend.”

“Shit, yeah. I remember wondering about that. She never spends time away from the club,” Dom adds.

“Went where?” I ask.

“That’s just it, she didn’t say. When she came back she was…different.”

“Different how?”

“Happy…” Nancy’s voice trails off, and she frowns.

“Happy? You mean she has a man?” Connall asks before I can.

“No,” Nancy says quickly. “Not that kind of happy.”

“What aren’t you saying?” I press.

“I can’t put my finger on it. She’s just not herself. She’s worried in a way that isn’t like her. It’s a weird combination.”

“That soundsexactlylike how a woman behaves when they get a new man,” Connall points out unhelpfully.

“No. She’s not seeing anyone,” Nancy insists.

“I hope to fuck you’re right because if she is, I might just have to hunt the bastard down and cut out his heart,” I blurt out, earning me a wide-eyed look from Nancy and a chuckle from Dom and Connall.

“You gotta chill, man,” Connall says, smirking.

“You’ve asked her about it?” I ask, scowling. I promised myself I wouldn’t act like a murdering psycho and go around killing the men she’s been with these past couple years, but fuck it’s hard to suppress that urge.
