It was the man that had saved him.

Micha looked up just as they turned the corner. Micha’s savior walked side by side with Ezra. He was tall with a huge scar that crossed over the bridge of his nose. His face was permanently in a scowl even when he laughed. His hair was a dirty blond and swooped back. It was the very man that wanted Arden to pay for his crimes and to be taken down.

What was he doing there?

“Oh Micha,” Ezra said.

Micha blinked a few times and dragged his gaze from his savior to Ezra. But he couldn’t help but watch him out of the corner of his eye. Hecouldn'tbe there.

“Arden is looking for you.”

“The young prince is here?” Janek asked

Ezra punched Janek in the shoulder. “You know if Arden hears you call him that he will gut you.”

Janek’s steely gaze bore into Micha. “I don’t doubt it. We all know how bloody he can get.”

Ezra stopped laughing and glanced at Janek before shaking his head. “That was long ago.” His smile looked forced and out of place for a moment. Ezra placed an arm around Janek’s shoulders and pulled him close. He smiled at him as if they were long lost friends but how would Ezra feel if he knew the man next to him was planning his brother’s death? And using Micha to do so?

Micha’s stomach rolled and he had to swallow back the bile that burned back of his throat.

“What’s the matter? You look sick,” Ezra asked as he reached out. Micha took a step back. He didn’t want either of them touching him if he could help it. The urge to scream for Arden or Bash clawed at his insides as he made himself as small as possible.

“I’m fine,” Micha rushed out.

Ezra didn't look convinced, but before he could ask Micha anything else, his savior spoke.

“Who is this?” Janek asked

Micha wanted to run away but his body refused to move.

“This is Micha,” Ezra said.

Janek offered his hand and Micha attempted to stop his trembling as he took the offered hand.

“Janek Nikoin, it’s nice to meet you, Micha.” Janek smiled at him but it was too big and toothy. It was like if an alligator smiled at its prey before snapping its large mouth over it. His hand felt wrong against Micha's. He wanted to yank it back but stayed still, counting down the seconds until Janek let him go.

Finally, he released him and Micha let his hand drop to his side, resisting the urge to wipe his palm clean. Ice cold fear laced through his veins and it took everything in Micha not to break down right then and there. He’d been afraid of Janek before but he’d saved Micha. There was no reason to fear him now, but Micha couldn’t control his natural reaction to the man whose gaze bore into him.

Micha nodded, unable to speak. He was hardly breathing.

“Shit, come on I have to help get the ballroom set up,” Ezra said. His amber gaze glanced over to Micha as he moved Janek over. “Hurry on back, Micha. The last thing we need is my brother tearing down the palace before his coming home ball.”

“Oh, there will be a ball as well? I can’t wait. Hope to see you there, Micha,” Janek said.

Micha couldn’t say the same. He was spinning down the drain of guilt and madness. It had been eating at him before but now it was tearing him to pieces. He needed to speak with Arden as soon as possible.

Micha stayed there leaning against the wall, trying to get his legs to work. His phone buzzed and he didn’t need to look to know who it was. He brought it up and stared at the screen, unable to comprehend the words at first. Savior popped on the screen but Micha now knew his real name. Janek Nikoin.

Janek: I hope you’re okay. I am sorry I could not answer.

Was he really worried about Micha?

Janek: It is good to see that you are looking much better than when I saved you. I am so proud of you. Soon you will be free to put this all behind you and find happiness somewhere far away.

A knot formed in the pit of Micha’s stomach as he read it over again. More guilt piled on his shoulders. Janek had saved him when he hadn’t needed to. But Arden was his mate and protected him constantly. He made Micha feel things he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to feel.

Micha’s fingers shook as he typed out his message. He needed to stick with it. Arden had changed. He held so much remorse for the things he’d done. Micha had heard it in his voice the night before. Thathadto count for something.
