Eldon’s gazetracked everyone’s movements, keeping note of everything as they got ready for the night. But something was off and had been for the past few days. His head tilted, his black hair fell sweeping over his forehead; he went with a messy look for the night’s bad boy theme. He alone was booked solid for the entire night. Most of his guests were loyal customers but some had seen his profile on the PGD site and specifically asked for him. Yes, he’d rather be running things and making sure Arden had support, but it was his job to entertain so entertain he would.

Eldon brushed his fingers through his hair. He knew he looked the part, and maybe it had been a huge part of who he’d been before he’d been turned, but that was over fifty years ago. Eldon had grown since then, but he knew the look worked for him. The tattoos and piercings made him seem even more interesting than he actually felt.

“Micha, what are you wearing?” Eldon said, stopping the Nephilim from walking past him wearing gods knew what.

“Is this not bad boy?” Micha asked.

Eldon fought back the instinct to laugh. Micha looked as if he’d walked straight out of a nineteen-fifties movie set.

“Why don’t we lose the leather jacket and pants.” The entire outfit was a no; this happened on the nights Arden allowed the host to choose their own wardrobe from time to time. But he was happy to help.

Black cat ears on top of neatly combed black hair came into view, and Eldon sighed with relief. “Spooky.”

The cat boy seemed distracted as he kept looking around. Eldon glanced behind him. Arden was at the bar, but that wasn’t where Spooky looked, which was abnormal. The familiar was usually all over Arden whenever they weren’t working.

“Spooky,” Eldon called again.

Big hopeful brown eyes turned to him, but they dimmed slightly. Eldon studied the man a little more as he made his way over to them. The urge to ask him what was going on sat heavily on the tip of his tongue, but he swallowed it back down.

“Are you busy?” Eldon asked.

Spooky shrugged. “I guess not,” he muttered as his shoulders sagged.

Eldon cocked a pierced brow. “Okay. Can you take Micha back up and change? I have to check on the other hosts before we start letting people in.”

Spooky gazed between him and Micha. His black hair was pulled back in a small short ponytail showing off his sharp jawline, and for some reason, it made his pouty lips stand out more than usual.

“Hey, I can get changed on my own. Not like I have a lot of people booked tonight anyway,” Micha muttered.

Spooky seemed to snap out of his momentary trance and took in Micha. Unlike Eldon, he didn’t succeed in holding back his laughter.

“Wow that’s bad,” Spooky said.

Eldon bit the inside of his cheek. “It’s not that bad, but it won’t exactly have customers asking for you either.”

Spooky opened Micha’s leather vest that was two sizes too big and laughed even harder. “Oh man Micha. I knew you’d have a hard time pulling off bad boy, but this is tragic.”

Micha’s face went red, making his freckles stand out even more. “I thought it was a good look. It was either this or a suit.”

“You might have been better off with a suit,” Spooky said.

Micha sighed. “Gamble said it wouldn’t look good on me.”

Spooky stopped laughing, and his brows lowered. His shoulders tensed slightly as he moved closer to Micha, but whatever he was going to say, he thought better of it and forcibly relaxed.

Interesting.

“I have to agree with Gamble since you’re no doubt referring to the movie we watched two days ago.” Eldon sighed. Micha was so innocent some days that it was a wonder how he’d found himself at PGD. If it weren’t some unspoken rule that you don’t ask about someone’s past, he’d be the first in line to ask Micha all kinds of questions. Like why did he seem so scared some days? Or why didn’t he know about the most basic things in the world? What kind of abuse had he gone through because that part was obvious. How could Eldon help him?

The last question might be a bit more selfish than all the others, but when Eldon saw Micha, something about the nephilim made him want to hold Micha and promise him rainbows and cookies.

“You guys had movie night without me?” Spooky poked out his bottom lip.

Micha’s eyes went wide. “Oh I didn’t know you wanted to join; you can come over anytime.”

It was so adorable watching them together. Micha genuinely didn’t have a malicious bone in his body. He embodied innocence; it only made corrupting him that much more enjoyable.

Spooky tilted his head as he and Micha talked about the next movie they would watch. Eldon took in the long creamy expanse of Spooky’s exposed neck. He could make out the pulse point, and if he really concentrated, he could make out the veins. His mouth began to water as his gums itched. What would it be like to bite Spooky while stroking his soft cat ears? Would he meow or hiss? Better yet, would the man purr for him like a good kitten? Eldon had never tasted a familiar before; they tended to be joined to their witches, and that was it, but Spooky didn’t have a witch.
