He was ready for the night.

Micha made his way to the stairs, his back straight and his steps sure. Micha stopped short as he caught sight of Rolla coming in through the backdoor. Her cool brown eyes pinned him in place. The air in the stairwell felt suffocating as Micha’s flight or fight instincts screamed for him to get the hell out of there.

“Um, it’s nearly opening time.” He recalled the schedule, and Rolla usually wasn’t there when Bash was on security. “Isn’t today your day off?” Micha asked.

“Yeah, I know that.” She shrugged. “Arden called everyone in, apparently the theme tonight is quite risqué.” She smiled at him as her eyes ran up and down his lingered body. He didn’t feel all that reassured. He’d met the three newcomers, and out of the three of them, Rolla was the only one that made the hairs on the back of Micha’s neck stand in alarm.

He was always skittish, but he didn’t think it was just that.

“Where are you going dressed like that?”

Micha wrapped his arms around himself, attempting to hide. For a short second, he’d felt so sure of himself, believing he’d been beautiful, but the clear distaste showing on Rolla’s face said differently.

“Uh tonight’s theme—”

“I hope to actually do your job.” Rolla said, bulldozing over his words as she shook her head. “You sure know how to pussy foot around. Playing make believe is a lot of fun, huh? You like to have people fawning all over you?”

Micha’s mouth went dry; he didn’t think she meant his host work. The wheels in his head turned, and the realization of who Rolla actually was hit him like a sack full of bricks to the stomach. She was the person to watch him, the one his savior sent.

The door leading outside opened as another host walked in. Rolla moved up the stairs and wrapped her arm around Micha’s, and leaned close. Her touch was calculated and made his skin crawl. He wanted her to stop touching him, now!

“I’d really like to see your room.” She wasn’t asking, and Micha could tell he wasn’t going to be able to talk his way out of it.

Micha audibly swallowed. “Umm.”

“Don’t make a scene about it. There are literally cameras everywhere in this place. The only places without any are the bathrooms and the host’s rooms.”

How did she know that?Micha hadn’t noticed any except the obvious ones outside the bar and the few in the bar area.

“Fucking smile and walk me to your room,” she whispered, still sporting a fake smile.

Micha’s heart started to beat erratically, and his blood rushed, blocking out all sound around him. For a short second, he prayed someone would come to save him. He’d given up hope for that before, but it looked as if old habits were coming back. His hands trembled slightly, but Rolla intertwined their fingers and laughed as if they were the best of friends.

His body moved on its own without thought; he led her upstairs even against his better judgment. “I’m supposed to be on the floor. The bar is opening soon.” But he was still moving like a good robot toward his room. Micha didn’t want her in his space; it felt wrong.

Goosebumps broke out all over his arms and legs as they made it to his door. He attempted to shield the number pad, but he felt her eyes on him. It was like being under a microscope.

He opened the door, and they made their way in.

“What is taking you so long?” Rolla asked as she looked around Micha’s room, her nose scrunched up.

“I. Well, umm.”

“Fuck this fake innocent shit. You don’t have to keep it up.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder. “It’s honestly disgusting. How anyone falls for it is beyond me.”

Micha flinched at each harsh word that came out of her mouth. He looked to the floor, wanting nothing more than for this impromptu meeting to be over.

“Shit, don’t tell me it’s real?” Rolla sighed. “Where in the hell did he find you? The gutter?”

Micha didn’t answer, there was no point. She’d made up her mind about him.

“Anyway you need to make a move already. I’ve been here for weeks now and you haven’t done shit.”

“I am trying.”

“Are you?” Rolla moved closer to him. She was shorter than him, but still, he took a step back. “What’s the plan?”

Micha opened his mouth, but he hadn’t exactly worked out one.
