Sir.

It’s like she was coming home—to me. As if somewhere in a past life we met before and were always meant to be together. I have a primal need to control every part of her and what happened back in that bedroom was just the start of something I am impatient to begin, so I do something completely out of character and lean forward and say firmly, “Look at me.”

She raises those gorgeous brown eyes to mine and I see the uncertainty in them as I say, “I have an offer you may want to consider that, shall we say, is a little unorthodox.”

“Go on.” She looks nervous but interested, and I take that as a sign to push on with my mad proposal.

“Holly, I am looking for someone to fill another type of job role, something a little more personal.”

“I see. What does it involve?”

She looks mildly curious and I raise the glass of whiskey to my lips, needing the courage it gives me before mine deserts me. “The job offer as my apprentice still stands. The contract is being drawn up as we speak and the salary negotiable.”

“And.” Her eyes are now bright with interest and I wonder how she’ll look when my next sentences register.

“Do you know what a dominant is, Holly?”

“Maybe you should explain.” She is giving nothing away and I can’t read her, so I carry on regardless, just hoping she’s not completely freaked out by what I’m about to say.

“I like to dominate women—sexually.”

She holds up her hand and says quickly, “Just stop right there, Mr. Prince, because if you are about to say what I think you are, the answer is no.”

The disappointment hits me harder than I thought and I raise my eyes. “You haven’t heard the facts yet, aren’t you being a little hasty?”

“I feel the facts, Mr. Prince, that you so kindly wrote with the palm of your hand on my ass. If you think I enjoyed that, you are wrong. You may get gratification at beating a woman into submission but quite frankly it did nothing for me, so keep your second job offer to yourself and re advertise because I’m not interested in applying.”

The spark in her eyes excites me even further, and yet I have to respect her decision and just shrug. “Fine, have it your way and we’ll revisit this conversation when you’ve had time to think it over.”

“I already have, the answer is no.” She looks in two minds whether to say anything and then obviously decides she can’t keep it in and says angrily, “The only thing that interests me about you, Mr. Prince, is your knowledge. I want to be the best journalist I can possibly be and despite how I feel about you as a person, you are the best in the business. So, I will push aside your, quite frankly, disgusting treatment of me so far and accept the apprentice job, but that is all. Lay one hand on me again and I’ll report you to the cops for assault. Don’t think I won’t either because I am so done with playing the victim here and if you don’t like it, let me go and you will never see me again.”

To my surprise, she stands and says firmly, “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need something to eat, so maybe you can send me the contract to read over before I sign. I’ll be in my prison and before you tell me otherwise, remember I didn’t ask for any of this and need some time to myself to adjust to what happened. You have what you wanted—the name of my informant, don’t make me regret giving it to you.”

Without another word, she turns and leaves my office and if I feel anything at all, it’s that now I want her even more.
