Page 26 of His End Game

I lift the coffee pot in offering and he accepts. Pouring myself a mug besides his, I join him at the table.

“Congratulations, by the way. Alannah showed Rayna and I a picture. He’s a cutie.”

“Thanks. He’s doing better each day.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Once he and Harper are home, I’ll take Rayna around to meet him. She’s picked him out a gift, and I got Harper a little something.”

He smiles. “Thanks, Harper will enjoy a visit from you both. All being well, he should be home soon.”

It goes quiet and I sip my coffee for something to do. Glancing out into the hall, I hope Leo doesn’t take all day. The silence is awkward.

“He’s got a lot to take in at the moment, but in time, his head will clear, and he’ll see what’s in front of him.”

Slowly, I look back to JJ and frown.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about?”

“I’m talking about you. You’re the one who’s right in front of him. I’ve seen the way you look at him, and I saw him watch you before turning off the radio. He wasn’t watching Rayna, it was you.”

My heart pounds with hope but reality is cruel and pulls me back into focus.

“You’re wrong.”

“About most things, yeah, I am. But not this time.”

“Then if you stayed at the club last night, you would’ve also seen him with Zara.”

“I saw him, and I saw her, but I never saw them together. When he went up to his room, I saw her head up with Grim.”

Though my day brightens, it doesn’t change anything. It’s not Zara who he’s holding back because of, and according to my old school friend, things between them are heating up.

I shrug. “It’s not my business even if they did spend the night together.”

“Maybe not now, but if you give him the time he needs, he’ll be your business and the likes of Zara will be put back in their place.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because he’s my brother and I know him. I know him better than anyone and you’re making him question himself. That means he’s moving on, slowly, but he’s going in the right direction. Plus, I’m like a fuckin’ love doctor or something. I get feelings about people.”

It would be too easy to believe him just because I want to.

“I’m only here for Rayna.”

“Just because you don’t see Leo talk, doesn’t mean he doesn’t talk to me. I know what’s gone on between you.”

I’m taken back but I shouldn’t be surprised. Leo and JJ’s bond is tight.

“Then you know that’s not much, if anything.”

“You have feelings for him—”

I push up out of the chair. I’m not doing this with him. Thankfully, Leo walks into the room, dumping his phone and smokes on the table. He looks between JJ and I, and I turn my back and pour him a coffee.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing. JJ was telling me how Gunner’s doing.”

Narrowing his eyes, I can’t keep my eyes on him. After the conversation with JJ, I need to process. He says Leo didn’t sleep with Zara last night but all I see is them together.
