“Whatever. We’re heading into the city today, but I’ll be home tonight.”

“Okay.”

“Mom and Dad said they’ll stop by and see Rayna at some point today.”

I nod. I don’t know why he feels the need to add who they’re coming to see. I know it’s not me.

My jealousy grows and it’s stupid. He’s given me nothing to allow me to be jealous over. He isn’t mine.

I grab JJ’s empty cup and catch Leo jerk his chin for him to leave as I turn to dump it in the dishwasher with the breakfast things.

“You okay?” he asks when we’re alone.

Plastering a smile on, I say, “I’m fine.”

Frowning, he asks, “How have you been sleeping?”

“Fine.”

His frown deepens hearing my lie, but as usual, he says nothing. He says his goodbyes to Rayna and leaves.

I wish sometimes he’d take my frustrations with him. But where Leo Jackson is concerned, he doesn’t see my frustrations because he doesn’t see me and that’s the worst thing of all.

Chapter Seven

Leo

The ride into the city is uneventful but the turmoil racing around my head has me thrashing the throttle. I hit the road hard and fast, and JJ has no problem keeping up.

Every time I plan on talking to Holly, it ends up in some sort of fight and it’s wearing thin on my patience. Pushing her to the back of my mind, we hit Dog City and I signal for JJ to pull over.

I keep my bike idling and light a cigarette. Jay does the same and checks his phone, no doubt checking to see if Harper’s called or text.

“We’ll circle the city, ride by the new clubhouse, cruise by Effie’s salons and then head back.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“Anything from Harper?”

Shaking his head, he says, “Nah, she knows where I am and said she’ll only contact me if something is wrong.”

“I should’ve brought Zach along. You should be back at the hospital with Harper and your kid.”

“He’s good, she’s good. I’m good. I’m here cause it’s my job to be.”

“And Harper understands that? I don’t want her affected by it.”

Narrowing his eyes, he tells me, “Let me worry about her. She’s my old lady and when I say she’s good, she’s good. She understands.”

“Then let’s get this done so we can get back.”

Pulling off from the side of the road, we enter the city and check out the new clubhouse. Since we can’t get inside to look around, we don’t hang around. As we head to check out the first salon, I notice a storefront announcing it’s opening soon and the board above the window is the same style as Effie’s other salons.

This one isn’t on our list, and I come to a stop and send Slade the details to check it out. This opening soon means Effie should show her face to cut the ribbon or whatever, which means we’ll get eyes on her and our chance to take her out.

“Heads-up. Look who’s coming our way.”

Looking away from the salon, I watch six Dead Rats members ride by, not seeing us. Clocking the bottom rockers, they’re a chapter from down south.
