Luca’s smirk is as cold as his brother’s and his father’s, and I can’t help but offer my own.

“It’s exactly what we’re asking.”

“Like you have to ask. What’s the plan?”

Taking a pull on the cigarette, I watch the two brothers, noting how much closer they’ve become lately. Luca’s no longer the annoying little brother. Well, he’s still annoying, but he’s added violence and a bite with vicious sharp teeth.

“Dad’s gonna call for a meet, pissed with what went down today, and I’m gonna call him out. You were right to fight, and I’m not the only one who thinks so.”

I look over at Luca. “I take it you agree?”

“The pricks ruined my wedding night. You’re not the only one with a wife to protect, you know. Those fuckers need to go, one way or another.”

Victoria has changed Luca in ways I thought no one ever could. He’s still an asshole, obviously, but he has his priorities straight now, and he’s someone I trust to have my back in any situation.

“Agreed. You have my backing.”

With Harper away, I’ll gladly spend my time wiping out the scum infiltrating our town with a smile on my face.

Chapter Five

Cas

The brothers are seated, ready for the meeting, and I’m barely containing my anger. My fingertips drumming against the tabletop is the only sound in the room. You wouldn’t know JJ had been in a fight unless you looked at his knuckles. Angel, however, is sporting a nice shiner. One of the twins has a busted lip, and the other has a cut across his cheekbone. What I wouldn’t give to light up and inhale half a cigarette in one drag right now. Hell, I’d fucking kill for it.

“Did you all know we have brothers who are apparently un-fucking-touchable?” I begin. “Apparently, they’re above my orders.”

No one speaks up. They know exactly who and what I’m talking about, and JJ leans back in his chair and lights a cigarette.

“Cas, this is on me. It wasn’t their fault.”

Slamming my fist down on the table, I growl, “Then they should’ve stopped you. You all ignored a direct order. It was reckless and fucking stupid. You acted like we have something to prove.”

I’m ready to lay them out when Leo, shaking his head disapprovingly in my peripheral line of sight, catches my attention.

“You disagree?” I snap.

“Fuck yeah, I do.”

Half of me wants to cut him down, but the other half thinks of the future.

“Go on, then. Tell me what we should do?”

Let’s see how my son would handle this.

“I say we show them exactly who we are—the Rats, as well as the fucking sheriff.”

“What about the town?”

“What about it? We run the Rats out and shit goes back to normal. The town will be happy. We all win.”

He makes it sound so simple, so I ask, “There would be a high chance of collateral damage. How would you deal with that?”

His eyes pinch slightly. I know he hates being put on the spot, but if he wants to go in, guns blazing, he needs to be able to back it up.

“I would deal with it as and when it happens. There are times to hold back, but this isn’t one of them. Who knows what carnage could arise while we’re sitting back and avoiding town? The town knows us. If they see us fighting back, they’ll know shit will return to normal.”

If I’m to step down and pass Leo the gavel, I need to know he can handle every situation that’s thrown at him. It’s time he proves himself to me and to the club. Clicking my tongue, I sit forward, resting my arms on the table.
