What he really means is, I need to be stronger.

“The best advice I can give you, though, is to keep your eyes open to everything going on. You’ll see so much more than anyone wants you to see.”

“Like a spy?” I snort.

“Call it what you like, but you’ll know everything if you do. Even if JJ tells you things, you’ll be able to see what he’s not telling you. Like, if you had been watching over the last couple of weeks, you would’ve noticed Dad making moves to step down.”

I don’t know what to say to that. I thought he was a little distant when I got home from Red Thorne, but I put that down to the awkwardness between us.

“What will it mean when he steps down?” I ask. I can’t imagine anyone but Cas leading the club.

“Leo will take the gavel, and Dad will no doubt be a pain in our asses, seeing as he’ll be around all the time, busting our balls,” he snickers.

I snort in amusement.

“Won’t he still be a Lost Soul?”

“He’ll be a Lost Soul till the day he dies. I guess he’ll still be around the club, giving Leo advice if needed, but I know he wants to spend more time with you, Mom, and the grandkids.”

My heart races at the prospect of Cas taking time to be a dad to me.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Shoot.”

“Do you think he’ll be able to step down?”

He rubs his chin. “I do, and it’s because of you.”

I like hearing this. But doubt creeps in, wondering if he’ll regret it, thinking I wasn’t worth it.

Shoving those thoughts away, I ask, “Will you tell me about your wedding day? I asked Jay, and his reply was, ‘it was a wedding.’”

“I can do better than tell you. It was recorded. Well, until shit kicked off.”

“What do you mean?”

He frowns. “Didn’t anyone tell you what happened?”

“No.”

“The Dead Rats attacked after dark. A few brothers were killed, a few hurt.”

“Maybe Jay planned on telling me when he thought it wouldn’t freak me out.”

“It’s nothing for you to worry about. We’re handling it.”

Getting to his feet, he reaches out to help me up and pulls me in for a hug. Momentarily, I’m stunned. Luca doesn’t do hugs. But I wrap my arms around him, resting my head against his chest.

“Whatever the future holds for you, know that I’m here for you and the baby. Just don’t shut me out again. And I promise, I’ll keep a closer eye on you.”

A tear rolls down my cheek as I step away from him.

“Come on, I’ll you walk in.”

The door is being held open by a beer crate, and inside, brothers can be heard shouting.

“What’s going on with them?” I ask Luca under my breath.
