“They want to go hunting.”

“Do you want to hunt?”

The smirk playing on his lips tells me everything I need to know.

Seeing Cas heading for his office, I pull away from Luca and tell him, “I’ll catch you later.”

Pushing my way through the brothers, passing JJ sitting with Leo and Zach over by the pool table, I make my way into Cas’s office. When he sees me, he smiles, but I catch how tired he looks.

“Hey, you good?” he asks, gesturing for me to take a seat. Sitting opposite of him, I breathe through Gunner’s somersaults.

“I just spoke with Luca. We’re all good now.” When he casually nods his head, I blurt out, “Are you stepping down as president for me?”

His smile disappears. Sitting forward in his chair, he rests his arms on his desk.

“Where did you hear that?”

“It’s just something I’ve heard since I’ve been back. Is it true?”

“Would it scare you if it were?”

I think on it for a moment. “Honestly, I’m torn… if it’s true, that is.”

“Leo was always going to take my place one day, and that time is coming. I was serious when I told you I’m going to be around.”

Luca was right, but I’m still struggling to wrap my head around it.

“Things are going to change around here. It’s all good things, I promise.”

I never feel firmly on my feet around here, seeing as shit changes like the wind. But if he’s going to give a hundred percent effort with me, then I’m going to give him the same.

“Does that mean Jay will step up as Leo’s VP?”

“Most likely. Would that worry you?”

“I knew it could one day be a possibility, so no.”

His smile tells me that’s what he wanted to hear.

Raised voices from the bar grow louder, gaining his attention. Rising from his chair, he walks around his desk to help me up.

“What we’ve talked about isn’t to leave this room. It’s not common knowledge amongst the brothers, and it won’t be till I’m ready to share and take on the headache.”

“Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.”

I like having this between us.

Out in the bar, Cas calls for everyone’s attention, and I weave through the brothers to join Jay and Leo.

Once everyone is focused on Cas, he grumbles, “I know you’re tired of hanging around. I get you all want to go take out any fucker you come across, but you’re all giving me a fucking headache. Our time will come, and when it does, I promised you all you would get your pound of flesh.”

With that said, he returns to his office, and I turn to Jay and look over his patches.

I reckon the VP patch will look good on him. I’ll be the VP’s old lady, which makes me more determined to stay healthy and be at his side when he needs me.

“What were you and Dad talking about?” Leo inquires.

He and Jay probably already know about Cas’s plans, but I want to keep our conversation between us. I’ll talk to Jay later when we’re alone and behind closed doors.
