“No.” He stilled her hand. “I love this gown.”

A blush covered her face. “I bought it two days ago...for you.”

He chuckled. “To seduce me? Thank you, babe. I’ll make sureweput it to good use.”

His fingers skated over the material, circling and pressing, and moving from her breasts, down to her waist and belly, and all along her thighs.

Covering her face with warm kisses, he moved to her throat, and shoulders, bit the straps and lowered them, his lips lavishing every inch of flesh he uncovered, until the little satin piece heaped at their feet. His legs framing her thighs, he glided into her core and thrust. She followed his tempo, her moans mingling with his groans until they collapsed, exhausted.

“I love you, Matt.”

“Love you, too, babe.”

Later, he rolled onto his side and kept her snuggled against him, allowing them both time to recover.

The fairy dust from their heated sex vanished, and silence settled in the room.

She stirred in his arms. “Matt, are you hungry? Would you like to have dinner?”

“Good idea.” He sat at the edge of the bed, reached down for his clothes.

She slipped on her satin gown. “Maybe I should give you a quick tour of the place.”

He slipped on his boxers and stood, surveying the room. “I guess this is your room, your bed?”

She chuckled. “Exactly. This door leads to the bathroom, and this one opens into a walk-in closet.”

“Quite a big room.”

For a second, a nasty thought nudged him. She’d lived in Chicago with her ex. Was this the bed they’d shared?

“Nice furniture,” he added, studying her face.

“I bought the house when I moved to Cincinnati and furnished it. I couldn’t afford expensive things, but I wanted it to be comfortable.”

He relaxed and followed her into the hallway.

She pushed open a door and waved a hand around.

“This is Mia’s room. She was only six at the time, but she chose her own stuff.”

He admired the white upholstered panel headboard, its pink and white comforter, the night tables, and the desk. “What a cheerful room.”

Strange… The girl didn’t have any pictures of her father on her walls or furniture.

Brenda led him into the living room he’d crossed previously without even looking at it. Here too, no pictures, none at all. Nothing to reveal Brenda or Mia’s backgrounds.

“On this side, we have a guest room with a bathroom and an office. The basement is converted into an entertainment center with an extra bedroom and bathroom.”

Beyond the living room, they crossed a dining room with its glass table and leather chairs, and a bar on the side, and ended the tour in the cozy kitchen, the pleasant scent of floral potpourri floating around.

“Three years ago, I had the three bathrooms remodeled, but I haven’t touched the kitchen yet.”

Had anyone ever visited this relatively large house?

Brenda warmed the burgers and brought out a bowl of strawberries and whip cream for dessert.

“You’ll like it. I’ve added Grand Marnier.”

They lounged on the porch swing. Cuddled against him, she relaxed and chatted about her daughter, discussed her career pressures and advantages, but never opened up about her previous relationship. It was as if she’d tried to erase him from her memory forever. Was it fear or resentment that had made her lock that door to her past?

His head full of silent questions, Matt caressed her hair, trying to alleviate her hidden pain. Had the man abused her and her daughter? That couldn’t be since she’d just let Mia vacation with him for a week. Was she the one who’d fallen out of love and had escaped from a smothering relationship?

Obviously, she didn’t trust him enough to confide in him, and he wouldn’t pry into her past. He would follow her lead and continue to have a good time with her—for however long their attraction lasted.
