She shut her eyes and drifted off.

Despite her better judgment, Sienna worried about Tyler. The fact that he’d mentioned meeting with his ex-fiancée proved he trusted her with his personal problems. She chided herself for her naive advice to go and meet his ex in person to clear the air. She should have guessed the woman wouldn’t easily give up a kind, good-looking, and bighearted doctor. Beverly would do her utmost to keep a grip on her former fiancé.

Over the past three years, Sienna had never been interested in any male. No one could compare to John, the love of her life, but somehow Tyler, without an improper word or glance, had slipped under her defenses. Being a dedicated doctor and generous man was part of his nature. Just like John. And just like John, he was incredibly attractive.

Pacing from the kitchen to the living room, Sienna tortured herself with useless questions. Hadshemanaged to drag him to her place? Was Tyler carrying a stronger torch forherthan Sienna had assumed?

“Mommy, sit down. The doctor said you have to rest.”

She looked at her daughter with amused wonder. It was amazing the way Dalia had responded to Tyler’s kindness right away and obeyed him without discussion. Maybe her daughter needed a father figure in her life.

“Mommy, your phone. It must be him.” Dalia jumped up from the floor and reached for the phone on the coffee table.

“Finally,” she muttered under her breath and read his text.

Bev had a bad allergic reaction to the chocolate cake. I called 9 1 1. We’re in the ER at Nassau Hospital. She’s had epinephrine and cortisone injections. Waiting for her to settle. Not sure when I’ll be back. Don’t wait up for me. A big hug to Dalia.

Sienna’s lips twitched. She frowned and finally smiled. Thank God, the ex hadn’t dragged him to her house. She must’ve been quite upset to eat cake in a restaurant without checking the ingredients. Tyler would never ignore a patient, not even the ex-fiancée who’d upset him no-end these past two days.

Don’t worry about us. I’m feeling much better.

Especially after being reassured that Tyler was safe and sound in his own hospital, withpoorBeverly lying in a hospital bed, not in his arms.

Come home whenever you can. I’ll leave the lights on in the kitchen. I hope Beverly feels better soon.

He answered right away.I’ll keep you posted. Gn.

“Dalia, Dr. Kent is with a sick patient. He’s sending you a big hug, and said you should go to bed.”

“Okay. I’ll sleep now with you and see him tomorrow.”

Sienna shared her daughter’s trust in Tyler. Somehow, she knew he would keep her in his thoughts and contact her soon.

His right leg propped up on his left knee, Tyler browsed through the medical reports on his department’s website. Tomorrow morning, work would resume as if this weekend hadn’t changed his life forever. His schedule showed three surgeries, a visit to the NICU, and rounds in the nursery and children’s ward. The busy day would keep him suitably occupied, allowing him to forget his recent issues.

“Water...” The barely audible word alerted him. Beverly still had trouble speaking and breathing. They should increase the oxygen flow and give her more medication.

He pushed the button to elevate her legs and called Dr. Carlysle.

“She asked for water, but her voice is extremely weak.”

“On my way.”

Anthony arrived immediately. “Beverly, can you hear me?” No answer. He approached her head and raised his voice. “Beverly?”

“Huh...”

“Do you want water?”

“Ye...ah. Can’t br...”

The ER doctor guessed more than heard her rasp. “You can’t breathe?”

Her eyes opened a tad and she shook her head.
