Dr. Carlysle ordered Albuterol to relieve her breathing difficulty. A nurse came and injected the drug into the I V line.

“Can you give her some water?” Tyler held her head up, and the nurse slid a straw through her lips. “Go ahead, Bev, sip some water.”

She did, looked at him, and shut her eyes, exhausted.

Tyler glanced at the monitor. “Her pulse is too low.”

Anthony looked over. “It’ll improve in a couple of hours.”

“How about admitting her to a floor?”

“I’m keeping her here until she’s completely recovered. You can go home. We’ll keep an eye on her.”

Tyler would never leave her alone in an ER room in this condition. “I’m staying until she’s out of danger.”

“She’s under treatment, what more do you want?”

“Thank you, Anthony.”

He wouldn’t let an attending physician tell him what to do. He settled back in his chair and kept browsing through his phone.

Two hours later, a technician arrived to take blood from Bev’s arm. The cart’s rattling noise woke her. She opened her eyes, turned her head, and smiled at him. “You’re still here.”

He clearly understood the words muttered in a husky voice.

“Yes, I’m here. I said I would stay until you felt better.”

“I feel ... better.” She touched her throat. “Breathing better.”

The technician withdrew three vials of blood. “Done.”

“Did you... leave... any...” If she could joke, she was definitely on the mend.

“Are you thirsty?” He indicated the thermos of water with its straw.

“Yes.”

He slid an arm under her neck and raised her head, bringing the straw to her lips. She drank deeply.

Pushing the straw away, she said, “Wait. Kiss me, Ty.”

He chuckled. “You’re one of a kind, Bev. Stubborn. Always determined to have it your way.”

“Please.”

He kissed her forehead and cheek. “With my best wishes for a prompt recovery.”

“But you stayed with me. All this time.” Her voice was improving together with her combative nature.

“As a doctor with a patient.”

“No. The other doctor is ... Anthony.”

“Dr. Anthony Carlysle? You heard his name? And here I thought you were teetering on the edge of a coma,” he quipped.

“He’s my doctor. You’re my ... my—”

“Your friend, Bev. We can’t be anything but friends. Our marriage would have been a huge mistake.”
