“Yes. Of course.”

“And you won’t drug her? She flushed those other pills, but how do we know you don’t have another box somewhere?”

She sighs. “I guess you don’t. My word is all I have right now, Mr Bossier. And I give you my word that there are no other drugs, nor will I ever threaten to use them again.”

“Can we negotiate?” I ask, and she chuckles.

“A negotiation? You want me to negotiate for my daughter to return home?”

“Yeah. I do.”

Mrs R sighs. “Fine. What are your terms?”

“If I can convince Rhys to come home tonight, will you give your permission for us to take Rhys away for the weekend? This weekend.”

“What?” She laughs. “You want me to let her run off with you somewhere that Julie can get to her?”

“No. The opposite, actually. It will be a secret location that only you and I will know. We won’t go anywhere. We will stay at that location for the weekend.”

“Why?” There is accusation in her tone.

“To celebrate the end of the year. A very hard year for most of us. Let Rhys come away with us and forget about the ugliness Julie and Brian have brought back into her life. She will be safe. I promise.”

“You think she’ll go for it?” Mrs R asks hopefully, and I grin.

“Yes.”

“Fine. If you can convince her to come home tonight, I’ll be happy for her to spend the weekend with you boys as long as the location is kept secret, and I know it.”

“Ok. Give me some time. I’ll get her to call or message you after.”

I hang up the phone feeling proud as punch until I realise I somehow have to convince Kitten to go home to her parents tonight. I really want to take her away for the weekend, but if she doesn’t feel safe going home, then she’s staying here. I mean, I could just take her away anyway, without her mum’s permission, but I don’t want to burn bridges that Kitten will need. The last thing I want is to come between her and her parents.

I stroll back over to the others, and Garrett raises a brow at me.

“You had a good chat with someone?”

“Yeah, Rhys’ mum.”

His brows shoot up. “What did she want?”

“She’s worried. Heard from the cops about the call from Julie. She wants Rhys to come home.” I plant my arse on a rickety barstool and face Rhys and Simon. They have given up on snooker and are now spinning in circles to see who falls over first.

“Do you think Rhys should?”

I tear my gaze from the two clowns and look at my big, broody mate and shrug. “I only think she should if she wants to. I don’t think her parents are a threat. I think they are just going crazy with the need to protect her. I made some negotiations.”

A loud crash makes us jump, and I turn back to see Simon headfirst in the wood heap as he laughs uncontrollably. Rhys falls to the floor in her own fit of laughter, her hand pressed between her legs as she crosses them.

“Stop! I’m going to pee!”

We can’t help ourselves and join in laughing at the idiots.

“Rhys won, Hastings.” Marcus declares. “She gets to use the toilet first.”

I frown, “Why is that even a competition? Can’t Hastings take a piss outside?”

Marcus turns to me and shrugs, his face just as confused as mine.
