Ivy

Dressedinagown, I chatted to a woman who’d also had a mole removed when Chase came rushing in. My mother was close behind, mirroring my bewilderment, because Chase looked like we were about to be invaded by zombies.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him.

He pointed at my blue gown. “Why didn’t you talk to me? I would have helped.” Alarm coated his eyes.

“Well, I didn’t want to bother you. You have a lot on your plate. And Mom didn’t mind helping.”

Chase rubbed his neck and his jaw then dragged his fingers through his hair, making it stick up. “You should have discussed it with me.”

“I didn’t think it was that important, to be honest.”

“Not fucking important?” His raised voice made me wince. Meanwhile, the older lady I’d been sharing the room with looked at me as though to say my boyfriend was nuts. Yes, he was nuts all right. Emphasized by his constant hair-raking, giving him a crazy cockatoo hairdo.

His eyes were wide and alarmed. I couldn’t believe it. “Is there somewhere we can talk about this?”

“About what?” I asked.

“Hell, Ivy. How can you be so…” He ran his fingers through his hair violently again. “So relaxed about this?”

Looking sympathetic, my mother shrugged.

“Can we at least talk alone?”

“I guess so,” I said, laughing at how ridiculously emotional he’d become. “I’m not sure what’s gotten into you, though.”

“What’s gotten into me?” His eyes popped out. “How could you do this without telling me?”

“Do what?”

“You know… get rid of it without telling me.”

“Well, I thought it was a good idea. I mean…” I paused for a breath. Why the hell was I having to explain myself?

He kept looking at me expectantly.

“Well, you know, it’s what they tell us to do.”

“Who the fuck is they?” His voice went up, and I gave the older woman an apologetic smile.

She rose. “I’ll just pop outside for a moment and give you a little privacy.”

“Look, Chase, I don’t know what you had in your coffee this morning, but you’ve kind of lost your mind, storming in here like this. As much as I appreciate your concern, you’re being kinda weird.”

Chase turned to my mother. “Can you believe how cool she is about this? I mean, aren’t you a little worried?”

“I can’t say I am, Chase. It’s a pretty standard procedure.”

“Standard? If everyone felt this way, the population would be halved in no time.”

“The population?” I shook my head. “From not getting it cut off?” I smiled meekly. “Burned off, actually.”

“Huh?” His frown deepened. “Burned off? And you sitting there looking like you just met a friend for breakfast.”

“That’s not a bad idea, I’m starving,” I said, trying to make light of what was turning into a bamboozling situation.

He shook his head as though he were suffering from a neurological disfunction.
