“He always does it,” Ambrose said, joining us.

“Shouldn’t we be doing something like chopping cheese?” I asked, checking my watch.

“No need. It’s being catered.” Just as Ambrose said that, the caterer’s van arrived.

Within two hours, around seven o’clock, the guests started to arrive, and after drinking two margaritas I felt light-headed and giggly as I watched Chase roll out the record collection and set up his DJ desk.

“Another hidden talent, I see,” I said, passing him records from a box he’d dragged in.

“I like to spin a few discs for these family affairs. It’s fun.”

I looked at a Doobie Brothers’ record. “It’s mainly seventies music, I see.”

“Some of it. I mix it up. I throw in modern stuff too.”

“I haven’t told anyone about us yet,” I said.

“Good, we’ll announce it later over a glass of champagne. I’ll make a toast. What do you think?”

I nodded. “I haven’t told my mother.”

“Really?” He looked surprised.

“Well, you only just popped the question, and she’s away.” I played with my ring.

“I see you’re wearing it. It looks great with that dress. You look beautiful.” He kissed me.

“I just put it on now. I’m sure Sara and Liam will notice. Maybe we should make that announcement soon.” I smiled.

He nodded. “Let’s do it now. This can be an impromptu engagement party.”

Are we really about to do this?

My heart raced suddenly. “I wish my mother was here. But sure, we’re all here. My besties are like family.” My throat lumped up. “I might just call my mom first.”

“Why don’t you conference her in while I’m making the announcement?” He cocked his beautiful head and smiled sweetly. I wanted to fall into his arms and stay there forever.

I had a lifetime to do that. I pinched myself. It felt so surreal. Me and Chase. Forever?

I went into the bedroom and grabbed my phone. Much to my delight, she picked up straight away. “Hey, Mom.”

“Darling, how nice to hear from you. I hope nothing’s wrong.”

I rarely called her, so it wasn’t just her being paranoid. “No. I just need to tell you something.”

“Oh? What’s that, sweetheart?”

I entered the large living room, where Chase had gathered everyone while the waiters filled everyone’s drinks.

He nodded at me.

“I’m at a party, and I want you to hear this, okay?” I said into my phone.

“You’ve got me all curious now.” She laughed.

“Can I have everyone’s attention,” Chase announced.

Everyone stopped talking and turned to us. Chase placed his arm around me and said, “I’d like to introduce you to my future wife, Ivy Starr, who I’ve fallen head over heels in love with.” He looked into my eyes, and I felt tears pricking my eyes.
