Mountain looked in the mirror once again. He didn’t know why he was so nervous. Wasn’t he supposed to be a bad ass biker, instead of asshole who was making sure his beard was trimmed perfectly. Hell, if he wasn’t wearing his cut and waffle Henley you’d think his ass was getting married with the product he used to keep his hair in place. Between the patch in and seeing Amber, he was feeling something he hadn’t since high school. The pressure to do this right. Although she seemed like she took his explanation of Cinnamon and the dance she saw, it didn’t mean he’d been forgiven. Hoez pushed limits even with the claimed men. While they respected the Ol’ Ladies and their position, much like every part of the MC there was a balance when it came to power. Respect earned, but always within question because they were human. They fucked up. Had desires and more importantly, people tended to push as much as they could in any family. Now he would just have to prove the woman meant nothing to him and he wanted more with Amber, his Nightingale.

Spot rubbed between his ankles, making sure she had marked him well, leaving a bit of fur on his jeans as she stepped over his heavy boots.

He brushed his beard again, damn it was a patch ceremony and picnic. More people were going to be focused on Baldy’s return than him being patched in and here was like a twelve-year-old going to his first school dance. Taking his cologne, he put some on his hands and rubbed his beard and neck. With his whore juice in place, he hoped he hadn’t over done it since the scent of his cologne was the same as his body wash.

Spot jumped up on the closed toilet seat, then to the counter in the bathroom.

He patted the kitten. “Wish me luck Spot.”

The feline lifted her head in want of a good scratch from her papa before he left her alone.

He hadn’t thought to ask Amber if the kids were allergic to cats. For him, a good pet was a necessity for kids growing up. Yes, they were a burden at times for the parents, but they taught empathy and responsibility if the parents made sure the kids were the ones taking care of them. Sure, he had a butler and a rotation of maids and governesses growing up, but he also tended to a menagerie of lost souls of the four footed variety.

Heading out into the hallway, he could hear the party already going on downstairs in the clubhouse. The picnic was set up outside and he was just on time. Officially, it started at two p.m. and it was ten minutes to two.

When he made it to the bottom of the stairs, he saw the place was packed. Several of the women were in the kitchen finishing up the food and putting them in chafing dishes. He walked toward the doorway. Leaning in he called out, “You need any help?”

“Mountain, I’m pretty sure you’re one of the men we’re celebrating today. You go on ahead and find the guys. We’ll get the prospects to help us carry out the food.” Roadkill was stirring what looked like potato salad.

“If you’re sure? I don’t mind helping.”

“Get on with you.” Roadkill gave him a wink. “We’ve used and abused you enough over the last year.”

He held up his hands in surrender. “Okay, I’ll be off.”

Heading outside he found Red, Cass and Hack standing next to the grill. He wondered where Baldy was at. If he even had arrived yet. Could the man stand upright? Or would he be in a wheelchair or with a walker? All possibilities following the head injury he’d suffered.

“Red, where’s the man of the hour?” he asked as he approached the President.

“Well, that would be you and Ax now wouldn’t it?” Red grabbed his hand and they shook then pulled him in a hug and chest bumped. “It’s your big day too.”

“Well I know, but I was wondering where Baldy was?” He looked around again, to see if Baldy was resting somewhere.

“Hollywood took Lil Bit to pick him up. They should be here soon. He was discharged and waiting for her when she left here about two hours ago.” Red turned to the grill and fired it up with a good squirt of lighter fluid to send flames licking their way to the sky. On a card table were platters of raw meat next to the grill, ready to be seared to perfection.

Red passed the tongs off to Cass and stepped up to Mountain. Extending his hand a small slip of embroidered fabric with the wordmemberemblazoned on it was placed in Mountain’s hand. “Here is your patch. Ma will stitch it on for you as well as any rank you’ll get. Those, I promise won’t be drawn out so much. You’re now a member of the Steel MC. We don’t make a big deal out of handing these over, but the picnic and bonfire after is in celebration of you getting patched in. Sorry, you have to share it with Baldy and Ax but we decided to throw it all in together.”

“Hey it’s no problem. I’d rather be patched with a brother than solo. I’m just glad to finally be patched in. Thank you, Red.” He shook the Prez’s hand.

Cass and Hack congratulated him as well.

After he was done getting accepted, he happened to look up and there across the yard was Amber and her two kids. He smiled and waved then started toward her.

Cinnamon stepped in front of him and his hand fisted in irritation when he had to come to sudden halt to not run her over.

“Mountain, do I get to congratulate you first? I have something special for tonight. I bought it just for you.”

“Cinnamon, I’m sure another man would happily enjoy it, we had some fun, but the key word ishad. Don’t let it go to your head.” He pointed toward Amber. “I have someone that is special to me and I’m going to be spending a lot of time with her from now on. Move on and find yourself another.” Shifting around the Hoez, he made his way to Amber, making sure not to even so much as brush Cinnamon as he passed.

“Hi you.” He leaned down and kissed Amber lightly on the cheek. Then he knelt down in front of Maisie and Callum. “Hi you two. Are you here to enjoy some good food?”

“How good?” Callum asked.

“Better than McDonalds,” he countered. “Plus, we have some kids here, they’re younger than you guys, but that just means you can teach them cool stuff and sorta be in charge. You interested?”

“Yeah, Mom can we?” Maisie asked her mom.
