“Mine doesn’t live within spitting distance,” she pointed out.

“Yeah, but I’m pretty sure a big ass ripple went through the women when Mountain laid it out to Cinnamon,” Roadkill said. “Trust me, I was in the kitchen with a few girls when she came inside.”

“So Red has been with all the women here?” Amber asked a bit surprised by the lax way Roadkill was around them.

“No, that being said, he has been with a few of the ones who came up from the New Mexico charter. But look at Onyx and Topaz over there.” Roadkill pointed to a man as dark as midnight and the woman on his knee with short blonde hair with a few streaks of bright colors. “She dances still, not as much as before, she and Lil’ Bit are basically my seconds. Lil’ Bit because of Baldy and Topaz because she runs the Roadside and the women who dance there. Does that man seemed bothered by the fact the woman has spent a few nights with most of his brothers?”

“I wouldn’t—”

“No, he doesn’t, much like she knows a Hoez or six probably fucked him senseless at one time or another.”

“So I’m just supposed to get over it?” Amber asked, not sure if she was up for a life with fuck buddies a few doors down.

“If your man is for you and you alone,” Roadkill said. “Then what does it matter what he did before he met you. And by the way, I can tell you for a fact, based on the complaining I overhear, that man hasn’t gone near another woman since the accident.”

“Oh, come on.” Heat burst in Amber’s cheeks and her chest began to flutter.

“There are a few things you need to know about the Steels. Lying starts shit and we don’t like having shit started.” Roadkill nodded her head toward the fire. “Now, back to what is important, alcohol and laughs. I’m baby free until morning thanks to my mother-in-law, want to join us?”

“Sure, that sounds fun. I can go up to the bar, get a drink and head over.” Amber glanced toward the outdoor bar, little more than a mix of coolers and liquor bottles, but its purpose was served.

“No, tell me what you want and I’ll send one of the prospects to get it for you.” Roadkill took her order then sent a guy Amber wasn’t familiar with off to get it.

Following Roadkill over to the fire where several other women were all sitting on lawn chairs circling the fire. Those she hadn’t remembered from the accident or met before she’d been introduced to while they were eating dinner. She was good with names, but tonight she couldn’t for the life of her remember them. Maybe it was the mix of road and real names causing her confusion.

Either way, the laughter and discussion was a reprieve from the grade school discussions she would be having over the long weekend. Two weeks with no job had her practically fluent in kid show language and she was more than ready to start at the clinic on Monday.

Mountain walked up. “Nightingale, I think the kids are exhausted. Why don’t you come with me and we’ll put them to bed in my room? That way you could stay longer?”

“I don’t know, I probably should get them home,” she reasoned.

“How about you stay a little longer and I’ll carry the kids to your van I was hoping for a little time just the two of us.”

“Well, I bet they are tired. I saw Callum hiding a yawn just a little while ago.” She smiled at the other women then stood. “I’ll come back as soon as I put the kids to bed.”

“Um, I was just going to ask them if they wouldn’t mind listening for the kids while I take you for a walk. There are a couple of new builds on the compound I wanted to show you. Maybe it would be something you would consider moving into after you start your job at the clinic.”

“You two go ahead and take your walk after you put the kids to bed. I’ll look in on them to make sure they fell asleep in a bit.” Roadkill offered.

“Thank you that is so kind.” Amber took Mountain’s hand and they walked over to where the kids were sitting at a picnic table. “You two look exhausted. I think it’s time you two laid down and went to sleep.” Amber knelt down next to her kids.

“Ah, mom.” Maisie groaned.

“Don’t argue with me. Mountain has been kind enough that he offered his room for you two. Come on.”

“I have a kitten up there that you two can sleep with,” he offered. “Her name is Spot.”

“Really! That is so cool.” Maisie beamed. “Wait, you have a girl cat named Spot?”

“Got a problem with that?” he asked.

“Can we play with her? Or just sleep?” Maisie asked.

“She’s loves a good hand wrestling,” he said.

“Come on Callum, let’s go.” She grabbed her brother’s hand and pulled him toward the clubhouse.

Mountain smiled down at Amber. “Pets work every time. Spot will love them. Come on let’s catch up.”
