“It’s a good thing he was there, Bex,” I say softly. “He helped me.”

Three little words I never expected to say. But can’t take them back now they’re between us.

“And Brook? What did Ashton mean just now?”

My eyes shutter. “She came into the bathroom and started making things worse. You know how she is. Ashton told her to leave. He stuck up for me.”

Bexley’s expression hardens, but then he reaches for me. “Well, I’m here now,” he says, gripping my hand in his, squeezing tightly as if he expects me to slip through his fingers. “I’m here.”

He is.

But I’ve never felt more alone.

Bexley

"This is bullshit," I spit at whoever it is who's standing in my doorway.

"I know," Channing says as he walks into my room and sits on the edge of my bed while I'm in the bathroom running some wax through my hair. "But we gotta be good little puppets and do as we're told," he mutters, sounding about as excited as I am for tonight.

The Harvest Ball.

I have no fucking interest in a masked fucking ball, and it's really the last thing Mia needs, yet even she hasn’t been excused from this charade.

Grabbing the black and gold domino mask sitting on my countertop, I hold it to my face and roll my eyes. All Electi have the same design, apparently.

Shoving the thing in my jacket pocket, I walk into my room to join Channing, who's dressed exactly the same as me in a black tux."For the record, tonight is a really bad idea," I tell him. "Mia already thinks she's seeing Cade; the last thing she needs is everyone walking around with half their faces covered."

"I know, man. But she'll have us. We won't leave her alone. She'll be safe."

"I still don't like it. You've seen what she's been like this week. Every day she's more and more paranoid, looking over her shoulder and jumping at every little noise."

"We've been over and over the CCTV footage. There’s no sign of him. She needs to see someone, Bex. She can't keep this up."

"I know. I know," I say, scrubbing my hand down my face. "I hoped getting away on the weekend would’ve helped. I mean, it did for a bit, but then she freaked again."

"She was with people she hardly knew while she's barely holding herself together. Maybe being just the two of you would be better. Maybe she'll open up to you properly if you're away from any reminder of this place."

"Maybe. I don't know. I just… I wanna fix her. I want my Mia back."

"She'll get there. It's just going to take some time."

I blow out a breath, staring out the window at the trees, wishing I could see what she does just so she could feel a little less crazy. I want to believe her, I do so badly, but everything points to the fact that she's losing her mind, so it's gonna take some hard evidence to convince me otherwise.

"Come on," I say reluctantly. "Let's get this shitshow on the road."

Together we walk down to Sasha's room where the girls are getting ready."When are you going to come clean to Brandon and stop sneaking around?"I ask him.

"I have no idea. I'm following Sasha's lead. I still think she believes this isn't going to happen between us, like Phillip is going to pull the plug after all this Cade bullshit is over."

I nod at him, because although I want to be confident that he wouldn't do that to his daughter, really, it's very possible. That cunt doesn't seem to give many fucks about much, and I can't imagine his daughter's love life is one thing he does care about.

Channing knocks before Sasha calls out for us to enter.

In true Electi style, both girls are dressed in stunning black gowns.

Sasha's is a little risqué with lace and straps holding the top of the dress together, whereas Mia's is much more demure and elegant.
