I blow out a breath… I want… “I just want to be happy, baby. I've grown up with money and all the things it can buy, and I can tell you right now that it doesn’t buy happiness. I don't care if we end up in a trailer park with only a few dollars to our name, as long as we've got smiles on our faces.”

Water sloshes everywhere as she flips around so she can look at me.

"I love you, Bexley Easton."

Her lips press against mine and cut off anything I want to say, and by the time she pulls back and wraps her hand around my hard length, all thoughts of words really have fallen from my head.

The bright sunshine and the birds singing wake me up late the next morning, but that's not the most beautiful thing, because that's the girl fast asleep beside me.

I woke up more times than I can count in the night to check on her, and each and every time she was sleeping.

With a soft smile playing on my lips, I reach out and tuck a lock of hair behind her ear.Seeing Mia finally relax gives me the confidence I need to know that we will get through this, that Cade isn't going to torment us forever and that there is a light at the other end of the tunnel.

Once she finally wakes up, we have the most incredible morning. Mia makes us pancakes that we eat out on the deck before we argue over what to watch on the TV, and I finally end up conceding so that she can watch some chick flick, not that I really mind. How could I when she lays curled around me, feeding me popcorn every few minutes?

If it weren't for our reality always nagging on the edges of my mind, it would be the perfect day.

Mia turned her cell off the moment we got to the security room in the house the other night, but mine is sitting in the only position in this place that I've managed to find some signal just in case of emergencies. The others know not to ring unless it's a matter of life or death, so when it starts ringing not long into our second movie of the day, both of us tense.

"It's probably a sales call or something," I say as I untangle myself from Mia, although the ball of dread in my gut tells me it's anything but.

My heart jumps into my throat when I look down at the screen and see Phillip Cargill's name.

He never calls me.

Ever.

This cannot be good.

“What’s wrong?” I take in Bexley’s pale face and shocked expression as he ends the phone call.

“It’s Marcus,” he says quietly, as if he can’t quite believe it. “There’s been an accident.”

“Oh my God, is he okay?”

“He’s been rushed to the hospital. Phillip wanted me to know. He said he thinks I should be there… just in case…” His voice quivers and I rush to him, wrapping my arms around him.

“I’m so sorry.”

“This cannot be fucking happening.” He lets out a steady breath, but I feel his torment.

“What do you need?” I ask, because he’s right, this is the worst possible timing. But it’s his grandad. His family.

“I don’t know. I can’t think. Fuck,” he roars, pulling away from me. “Fuck!” His fist flies out, connecting with the wall. Bexley winces but doesn’t complain.

“Bex,” I say, trying to comfort him again, but he keeps me at arm’s length.

“I just need a minute. I need to think…” He starts tapping on his phone and brings it to his ear. “Channing,” he barks. “Phillip just called…” I stand there, but Bexley walks right out of the cabin, leaving me. Dejection burns through me, but I get it.

I’d been much the same when I woke up in the hospital. Detached. Distant.

When he comes back inside a couple of minutes later, he looks like a man with a purpose. “Channing is on his way.”
