“This is just the beginning,” I say, my eyes shuttering. “You didn’t hear him, Sasha. He was so bitter and twisted. He was like a different person.”

And that’s saying something.

“I still can’t believe my dad and Q had his dad…”

“Murdered?” It comes out harsher than I intend. “Isn’t that what Q does? How far their power stretches?” I pin her with a hard look.

“Y-yeah, but he was an elder.” She says the words as if they matter.

As if anything about this dark and cruel world makes sense.

“I still can’t believe they’re gone.” My heart breaks all over again. We might have had our recent ups and downs ever since the Eligere, but they were still my parents.

And they’re gone.

I blink away the tears, bone-weary from crying.

“I think I want to sleep,” I say, and Sasha nods.

“Sleep. I’ll be right he—"

“Alone.” My voice shakes. “I need to be alone.”

“Mia, I’m not sure that’s—"

“Please, Sasha.”

She stands, reluctance etched into her expression. “Okay, but if you need anything…”

“I know.”

I don’t watch her leave. Instead, I close my eyes and let the darkness consume me.

When I wake, it’s to Bexley staring at me.

“Hey,” he says around a weak smile.

“How long was I out?”

“A little over three hours. Can I get you anything?”

I shake my head. What I really want is to get out of here, but every time I think about it, I remember I have nowhere to go.

“Mia, I—”

“Don’t, please… just don’t.”

His jaw pops as he runs a hand through his dirty blond hair. We knew the Coglio would change things once Cade finally claimed me as his. But I never predicted… this.

I turn my head away from him, wincing at the sharp breath he takes. “Tell me what to do to fix this,” he whispers, his voice so full of pain it lashes my insides. I want to comfort him, the way I have so many times. But I can’t.

Not this time.

“Mia, look at me.” Bexley’s hand touches mine, and he threads our fingers together. His touch has always settled me but I’m too numb to feel it this time. I do look at him, though, unable to fight the invisible tether binding us.

Silence stretches out before us, thick and sticky, making it hard to breathe. So much has happened.
