"Okay, you've done a great job. What's his name?"

"C-Channing Rexford."

"Okay, we've got it from here."

Standing to my feet, I back away as they begin working on Channing, cutting his shirt away and injecting him with pain relief. I don't stop until I crash against the wall behind me.

I've never felt so helpless.

There's nothing I can do to fix him, and I have no fucking clue where Mia is. I don't even know where to start trying to find her.

Would he take her to the house? The church?

This is Cade we're talking about. He doesn't think like normal people.

I hear James' words in my head once more."He won't do anything silently or hidden. He will want you to know where he is. He will tell you exactly where Mia is."

"When, James? When will he tell me?" I ask myself as the medics continue working.

Please be okay. Please, I silently beg. Channing and Sasha don't deserve this.

Hell, none of us fucking deserve this.

Turning into the door beside me, I swipe up a shirt I'd discarded on the floor from the day before and pull it over my head.

The sound of my cell ringing wherever I left it in the cabin has me running out of the room in search of it. I find it on the floor, vaguely remembering it falling there after my panicked call to James not all that long ago.

My hands tremble as I turn it over to see who it might be.

For the first time ever, I pray I'm going to find Cade's name staring back at me, inviting me to whatever fucking game he's playing.

My heart drops, disappointment flooding me when I do get a look at the screen and find Ashton's name there. "What?" I bark, lifting it to my ear.

"They're at the sanctuary. We're on our way now."

"Fuck. FUCK," I bellow.

Hanging up, I look over my shoulder at the medics.

"Do what you need to do," one of them says, looking up from Channing. "We're taking him to Gravestone Hospital once we've stabilized his condition."

"Okay," I cry as I run out of the house, finding my car door still wide open from where I ran from it when I got here, and I wheelspin away from the cabin and back toward Gravestone.

* * *

There is an array of cars parked haphazardly outside Gravestone Hall when I pull up. It doesn't make me feel better about what I'm going to find inside at all. They might all be here to protect her from her living nightmare, but I have no doubt that he planned for it. Cunt plans for everything.

Anger surges through me that we've been on the back foot with him all this time. I still have no fucking clue what his endgame is.

Q—or more so Mia's dad—killed his. He's got his revenge. He killed Garth and Temperance. There's no need for any of this, for hurting Mia. For making an innocent girl his target.

Before I've even registered that I've moved, I'm pushing the heavy doors open and slipping inside the silent, eerie building.

They're expecting me—he'sexpecting me—so I have no chance of a surprise arrival, but still, my need to attempt to assess the situation I'm about to walk into makes me creep toward the door that leads to the sanctuary slower than I'd like.

The walk down the dark, ominous hallway to the room where my girl was officially handed over to that monster seems never-ending as I strain to hear voices, anything that might give me a clue as to what's happening in the underground room in the distance. But there's nothing.

It's like they're not even here.
