“Oh shit, look who just walked through the door,” Julie said.

“The icing on the cake of my day,” Dan said, crestfallen. “Sandra.”

“Everyone smile!” Lisa said as Dan went to rescue Ryan.

Sandra walked into the yard, ready to party.

“Please take Brent down to the water to play with his cousins,” she told the nanny. Then she went to Pam, who was standing with her sister Mary and the palm reader from the Bronx.

“Sandra, I’m glad you came,” Pam said, kissing her cheek. “I wish you’d have Brent say hello to me.”

“Oh god, I’m so sorry,” Sandra said, sincerely flustered. “I was just ready for adult time and carelessly didn’t even think about making him greet anyone. I promise to have him come up in a bit to say hello.”

“I’m just glad he’s here,” Pam replied. “I needed to see him today. It’s been a rough twenty-four hours.”

“What’s going on?” Sandra asked, concerned.

Pam gave her the brief version of events without mentioning words like cancer or terminal. Looking around, Sandra saw Jake sitting with Dan and Ryan.

“That’s an odd group,” she said.

“Oh, you’d be surprised. Dan and Ryan are best friends now, and Jake is fond of Dan. We’re family, I guess.”

“I have no one,” Sandra said, turning back to Pam. “Alex is getting on my nerves. Who’s left? I’ve never been so lonely.”

“It’s difficult to meet people unless you’re out there working,” Pam said. “I know you’re meeting people in the city.”

“But I want someone here,” she replied. “I’m sick to death of Manhattan. As soon as my project is finished, I’m closing up shop.”

“There will be so many people here later, a lot of the kids’ single parents and not just mothers, either.”

“I’ll stick around, then,” Sandra said, encouraged.

“Check out the lifeguard.”

“Not my type, too much tanning booth.”

“How much longer until your project is finished?” Pam asked.

“A long time. Five years, at least.”

Laughing, Pam nodded. “I get it. Well, in the meantime, fingers crossed, you’ll meet someone nice here. You’re already rich, so how about a working man?”

“That’s the only kind I’m interested in,” Sandra replied, laughing with her. “So where’s Dan’s new girlfriend?”

“I’m not sure. There might have been a parting of the ways already.”

“No way. It was just getting serious. He just told me he was cutting off the benefits, just kidding.”

“Thank god. I hoped you didn’t get caught in that web,” Pam said.

“Or vice versa.”

“Change the subject. Here he comes.”

“Here are my two favorite women,” Dan said, repeating his favorite line with a grin.

“Right. Where’s Lily?” Sandra asked.
