“Right! I’ll be right over.”

“See you soon.”

Laughing, she quickly got up to check her reflection in the guest bathroom. The light in there was horrible, casting a yellowish glow, but she still thought she looked pretty spiffy for anolder woman.

Ten minutes later, she heard the familiar sound of a car make that she couldn’t place right away pull into her driveway. When she turned the driveway lights on, she got the shock of her life, he was driving a Bug. Laughing out loud, she stepped out onto the porch just as six-foot-five-inch Blake squeezed out of the driver’s seat.

“My granddaughter asked to switch cars tonight because she needed more seatbelts. I forgot I had this monstrosity.”

“It’s hysterical,” Pam said, walking to meet him with her hand outstretched. “Blake, welcome.”

“So here we are,” he said, smiling down at her. “At last.”

“I wish I would have known you were interested. I might have facilitated it,” she said.

“Boy, you sure are pretty,” he said.

Pleased, Pam nodded to the house. “Come. We can drink wine and watch the fishing boats coming in.”

“Those are my two favorite things to do in the whole world.”

“Well, what do you know about that?” Pam said, smiling. “What do you know about that.”

While Pam and Blake Gage talked animatedly and laughed in the floodlights of her driveway, Dan drove by, alone, and almost drove up on the sidewalk trying to see who she was talking to. The guy was a big dude, but no one Dan knew, which pissed him off. He liked being in the know. As soon as he got inside the house, he called Lisa.

“Oh god, don’t tell me,” she moaned, answering. “Rene must be working tonight, right?”

“What of it? I have a question. Who’s your mother seeing these days?”

“No one. She’s been alone since Jake dumped her. Why?”

“I just saw her with some tall guy in front of her house,” he said, his voice an octave higher. “I don’t recognize him.”

“Dan, chill. It’s probably no one. Why do you care anyway?”

“What are you talking about? Of course I care. Call her, will you? Find out who it is.”

“Dan—”

“Just do it! Please.”

Lisa hung up and rang her mother’s cell.

“Can I talk to you tomorrow?” Pam asked, otherwise occupied.

“Who is it? Dan’s having a fit.”

“Tell him to go scratch,” she hissed.

“Mom, just tell me who it is.”

“Blake Gage. I’m hanging up now.”

Lisa keyed in Dan’s number. “It’s some guy named Blake Gage.”

“He’s a doctor,” Dan said, thinking. “Thanks.” And hung up.

He looked at his phone. It was almost seven thirty, time for Rene to leave work. Just as he was about to call her, she called him.
