Lisa dragged her to a shadowy corner of the side yard among the trash cans and kissed her like she wanted to be kissed. Then Lisa pulled Lily’s pants down and, falling to her knees, quickly brought Lily to a place where she’d promise Lisa her life if it would mean they could keep seeing each other.

Friday on the trip home from Manhattan, Sandra pledged to Andy that she would do what she could to ensure that he won the mayoral seat in the next election.

“I was married to Senator Monroe’s campaign manager, remember? I’ll be the best candidate’s wife, I promise. Grant Johansson isn’t going to know what hit him when the time comes. In the meantime, now is the time to get all your ducks in a row, to excuse the silly idiom. And being married to me might be a deterrent.”

“It won’t be,” Andy said. He wouldn’t tell her he knew all her secrets, but he did, and there was nothing that would be so scandalous that it couldn’t be dealt with. “And that brings me to getting married. I want to do it this weekend.”

She reached forward and closed the tinted-glass partition between Damon and the passengers.

“You do? In Babylon?”

“No, we’ll fly to Reno or Vegas. You tell me which one.”

“New York only has a twenty-four-hour waiting period,” Sandra said, laughing. “You’re the DA; you should know that.”

“But everyone will know our business, then. I want to announce it myself.”

“Let’s just do it here,” she said. “You must know a judge.”

“I do.” He got out his phone, laughing at himself. He was already a pushover for her. Keying in some numbers, he put the phone to his ear.

“Lyle! It’s Andy Roman.” They made a minute of small talk, then, “Can you perform a marriage ceremony for me and my lady this weekend?”

Sandra turned her head to cover a smile; he sounded like such a hick, so completely out of character, but it was so endearing.

He listened. “No, no license. We’ll have to postdate the certificate.”

Winking at Sandra, he nodded. “Great! I’m staying with her in Babylon, so Great Neck is perfect.”

They said goodbye, Sandra laughing. “Of course, Great Neck.”

“What can I say. So tomorrow at ten! I can’t believe it.”

“Andy, what’s your hurry?” she asked gently.

“I want to get you pregnant as soon as possible.” He ran his hand up her leg, under her skirt, over the tops of her stockings, and squeezed her rightthere.

She closed her eyes and rested her head on the seat, moaning. “Damon is probably looking in the rearview mirror,” she muttered.

“Do you care?” he whispered, working his fingers under her panties. “He can’t see through that glass.”

Rocking her head from side to side, she couldn’t speak. Andy hovered over her, kissing her at the same time he stroked her and probed her until she buried her head in his neck to muffle her sighs of pleasure.

Snaking her hand around his neck, she kissed him again, unable to reconcile the two completely different personalities she’d seen in that short ride: the endearing man who would arrange to marryhis ladythe next day, and the seducer who would finger his girlfriend in the back of the hired car.

Slowly recovering, she straightened her skirt and then reached for her purse, digging around until she found a small foil wet wipe packet that she opened and gave to Andy with a smirk. “Don’t touch anything until you use this.”

Laughing, he whispered to her, “Look what you did to me,” pointing to his massive erection straining against his Armani suit pants.

“Do you want me to take care of it?”

“No. That’s going to be deposited right where my finger was as soon as we get home.”

“I need to look at the calendar,” she said.

“If we do it nightly, eventually, I’ll get lucky.” He loosened his tie. “I can’t wait to get home. I promised the kid I’d take him and his buddies to Kidtopia in the morning.”
