“Good morning,” he said, his voice gravelly. “Why’d you leave?”

“I wanted to read, and I guess I fell asleep again. You must have been exhausted.”

“I have a terrible hangover.”

“You didn’t drink anything,” she said. “You’re not coming down with something, are you?”

“No, I don’t think so. I’ll probably feel better after a shower. Come with me.”

She looked at him with raised eyebrows. “To the shower?”

“Yes,” he said, holding out his hand.

“You look like a Greek God,” she said, giggling. “This isn’t just going to be a shower, you know.”

“My hangover just went away.”

Chapter 7

At four, naked again, Lily slid out of the bed, trying not to disturb Jason. They’d spent the morning making love, and after lunch, they were ready for a nap, which led to more lovemaking. He felt a little warm to her, but he said he was fine, and he was the doctor, after all.

After showering in the hall bathroom, she tiptoed back into the bedroom to the closet. Jason had flipped over and had his back to her. By the time she chose her outfit for Christmas night and went back out to the bathroom to put makeup on, he finally woke up.

“You can stay home,” she said. “If you’re sick, you’re sick. I don’t think you should go out.”

“I have a feeling I’d better show up tonight,” he said. “Papa Fairchild might not take kindly to me standing him up on Christmas night.”

“Oh, whatever. You’d better get the lead out, then, because we’re supposed to be there at six, and it’s after five now.”

Groaning, he threw the covers back, and Lily watched him sit up in all his glory. “Your body is amazing,” she said. “I can’t get enough of you.”

So fast she was taken by surprise, he sprang up and grabbed her by the wrist, pulling her down on his naked lap.

“I can’t get enough of you, either,” he said, reaching up under her skirt as far as he could go to squeeze her thigh. “I’m so glad you drove your car into a snowdrift.”

“Ha! Are you now? I wonder if fate would have found another way to bring us together.”

“That’s a scary thought,” he said. “I can’t imagine going through the rest of my life not having you in my bed.”

She knew what he meant and hugged him. “I’d still be miserable if you hadn’t agreed to work on your day off.”

“I’d better get up,” he said, pushing her off. “Will you make me a cup of coffee?”

“Okay,” she replied, turning around to look at him.

She pressed her lips together to keep from laughing. He was scratching his head walking to the bathroom, his buns flexing with each step. In the kitchen, she caught a glimpse of herself in his shiny refrigerator, and there was finally a big smile on her face.

In the car going back to the suburbs, Jason held her hand like he always did. “I feel like all we do is drive back and forth,” Lily said.

“This will be the last time for a while,” Jason replied. “It just occurred to me that I’m a schmuck.”

“You are not! Why on earth would you say that?”

“I don’t have a gift for you,” he said. “I really feel bad about that.”

“Jason, you made love to me all morning. That’s the best gift a new romance could have. Besides, we don’t know each other well enough to give gifts. That knowledge will come later, when we’ve lived with each other for a while.”

“You’re probably right. Buying you a gift will be like making love to you. I’ll know it when I see something perfect for you.”
